Is street photography legal? Today, most people walk around with a camera of some sort in their possession. Point-and-shoots, DSLRs and blogging cams, not to mention cellphones which have become ubiquitous. Yet it seems that in many public locations, security officials are paranoid about letting people actually use those cameras. Our guardians of public safety often have the idea that shooting pictures in public places might be a precursor to some sort of terrorism. It’s an understandable concern, but misguided ..read more

The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) Having been a street photographer for many years I’m often asked to share my experiences when out with other photographers. I have to admit that I’m often guilty of not sharing to much information, recently however I’ve been more forthcoming. The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) based here in Calgary as an excellent record of producing talented Photojournalists. Walking the streets of Calgary as much as I do, I often bump into SAIT students downtown learning the ropes and putting their knowledge to good practice ..read more

The Streets Of Calgary

Despite the threat of fines and an appeal from Premier Jason Kenney that they halt their large gatherings, opponents of COVID-19 restrictions gathered outside Calgary City Hall again this past Saturday (05 Dec 2020). Similar rallies are expected to take place in Edmonton and Red Deer while Canmore will see another anti-mask protest on Sunday. Looking at the large crowd that marched up Stephen Ave, I’d estimate between 600-750 people attended, making it one of the largest “Walk for Freedom” marches to date ..read more

The storyboards of our neighbourhoods. Every staple can tell a story – poles and lampposts are the story boards of our neighbourhoods We see them every day, we ignore them every day. We laugh at them and they make us angry, they can make us take action or bring out the rebel inside us. They are so common that we take them for granted, yet they have been around for decades. We read them while we’re waiting to cross the road, we use them to promote our causes, our businesses or just as a way to serve opinions on society ..read more

A chance encounter and conversation with picker Rick Walking in Bridgeland, a neighborhood in Calgary, I spotted this golf bag laying on the ground alongside these large decorative balls. Totally random and amusing at the same time. While I was taking the photo a voice off to my left shouted out “you can have them $10” I looked up and there stood Rick. Rick was standing in the open doorway of his garage, bundle of wires in one hand and a lawn mower battery in the other ..read more

Nighty nine percent of the time, street photography is a fun past-time and generally devoid of any problems, other than the odd person who refuses to allow me to take their portrait. When people say no, I simply thank them for their time and move on, there’s always another opportunity around the next corner. Sometimes however, on occasion, someone will become hostile or demand that I delete a photo. Occasionally, I come across a know-all legal expert who informs that I’m breaking the law and can’t just take photos in public ..read more
