Mark Reynolds, a dedicated bodybuilder, and owner of a UFC gym in Lone Tree, has long embraced the solitary and self-reliant nature of weightlifting. However, an incident in last November during a routine workout starkly reminded him of the vulnerabilities even the strongest individuals face.
While lifting weights, Reynolds collapsed from a cardiac arrest, losing consciousness, and becoming unable to assist himself. The collapse was attributed to an excessive intake of pre-workout supplements alongside prescription medication, leading to this life-threatening event. Th ..read more

Omaha resident Greg Schraeder suffered a cardiac arrest on a social bike ride on June 20, 2023. He was fortunate to be surrounded by a “dream team” including a retired pediatrician, a retired law enforcement officer, and a retired respiratory therapist. The group performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Schraeder for around 11 to 13 minutes before an ambulance arrived and shocked him with an AED before taking him away. He survived thanks to their swift action and now advocates for stress testing, knowing where your nearest AED is located, learning CPR, and setting up emergency contacts.

The middle of a sudden cardiac arrest event is not the time to discover that your AED batteries are dead or you are out of AED pads. The answer to this problem is to make sure your automated external defibrillators are inspected and tested regularly and any problems are dealt with right away.
With just a few minutes of your time and knowledge of AED maintenance requirements, you can be confident that your portable defibrillator will (most likely) be ready when an emergency arises. The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can save a life in the event of a cardiac emergency, but very few people know how to perform CPR correctly. If you see someone collapse and become unconscious with no signs of breathing, they are likely experiencing cardiac arrest. When that occurs, you need to act immediately.
The good news is that anyone can perform CPR; you just need to understand the steps involved. First, you need to check for responsiveness. Then, if the patient is indeed unresponsive, you move on to performing chest compressions and (in some cases) rescue breathing.
