I’m Francesco, a street photographer

A few words about me and why I’ve created my personal website and blog. Well usually I never talk about me, I don’t like to do that. My name is Francesco and I’m a physician. Back in 2010 I fell in love with photography (before I hated it) which for me is a form of art, similar to painting and music. I don’t like thinking about photography as a documentary and journalistic medium but simply as artistic expression of ourselves. By the way from 2010 my love for photography grew alongside with passion for cinema, an increasing indissoluble combination (I am also a film critic in Italy). Shortly ..read more

Why I shoot digitally in street photography
Santini Photography
by Francesco Santini

Here we go again; It’s always the same routine, which camera do you use? Theoretically everyone does street photography with the camera they prefer, and there isn’t necessarily one better than the other. Personally, I wouldn’t tell anyone to exclusively shoot in digital or film, or to use a particular lens or camera brand. I think that the camera we use in the streets must reflect also our style, but I’ll explain that concept better in a little while. However, I know why I can’t give up digital at the moment and there are at least five main reasons for this. Firstly, I take a lot of photos i ..read more

New photo added: Street photography gallery

I took this photo in 2021. Yes, I’m three years behind with editing, but let’s go with it. I remembered this particular photo because it’s a shot I’m quite proud of, and I remember also the moment. I was in the center of Rome, on Via del Corso, with other street photographers. We were playing with the light of a setting sun, capturing passersby in juxtaposition. There are also other shots, some better than others, but this one, in my opinion, is the best one. First of all, I appreciate the pose with the slightly bowed head and half-closed eyes. The elongated neck (perhaps it was indeed a pries ..read more

Embrace the imperfection in street photography and life
Santini Photography
by Francesco Santini

Street photography has been more than an artistic pursuit; it’s been a life teacher as I said also in previous blog posts. It’s whispered lessons about imperfection and the raw spontaneity of the moment. In the footsteps of great masters like Robert Frank and Daido Moriyama, I’ve learned that a blurry or slightly unfocused photo isn’t necessarily one to discard. Robert Frank’s “The Americans” and Daido Moriyama’s gritty Tokyo shots teach us to embrace the rawness. Their blurred edges and unpolished frames reveal the pulse of life—the heartbeat of the streets. Clarity is not what photography i ..read more

In recent times, the intersection of art and street photography has become increasingly significant. As artists, we recognize the value of social media platforms—they offer unparalleled visibility and connect us with other artists. However, we must tread carefully in this digital landscape. Instagram and street photography: useful or not? 1. The Power of Social Media: Undoubtedly, social media provides a global stage for our work. It allows us to showcase our art, engage with an audience, and build a community. The ability to connect with other artists, share experiences, and collaborate acro ..read more

New photo in street photography gallery added
Santini Photography

Just added another photo to my street photography gallery in the emotions section. I took this candid picture of two lovers  in 2021, in the center of Rome. I can’t recall the exact moment because I edited it now, about 3 years later. I have confused memories about it; after revisiting it on my hard disk, I vaguely recall the moment. I like it because it’s one of those street photos taken quickly, on impulse, in an elusive and sudden manner, as is my usual style. The digital noise and slight blur make the moment more passionate and emotional. This is the direction I have chosen for my str ..read more

Dune part two – Review
Santini Photography
by Francesco Santini

Finally it’s time to watch the second part of Dune directed by talented Denis Villeneuve. I went to Italian press preview few weeks ago and this is my (quick) Dune part two review. Movie is stunning, probably the best sci-fi of the last two decades. A dark story, dark characters as in the stunning Frank Herbert‘s original book. Villeneuve created a colossal movie after the unlucky (but wonderful) Blade Runner 2049. Dune part two is overwhelming, full of emotion and epic moments. Aesthetically the movie is stunning, but as important as visual effects we have the sound (soundtrack included), so ..read more

Cross Roads Blues by Oli Kellet – The loneliness of modern man

Recently I bought the wonderful new book Cross Roads Blues by photographer Oli Kellet. When I saw this stunning book on his website I was immediately amazed. A “street photography book” aesthetically wonderful for his colors and minimalism. Cross Roads Blues – Oli Kellet,Nazraeli Press, 2023     Cross Roads Blues – Oli Kellet,Nazraeli Press, 2023 Oli Kellet takes photos of people stopped at intersections, usually at sunset (or maybe sunrise?) with a colorful and warm light. They are waiting for the green light at the traffic lights, often in solitude. The point of view is usually fro ..read more

Street photography: happiness is just around the corner
Santini Photography

A series of street shots taken in 2021 in Rome. This is a series with a depression mood (obviously the title is ironic), I’ve already done one in the past. In such way this is my way to look at life with a melancholic eye, simply that’s me. So it’s not a mysterious that this is also my street photography style. I feel naked showing you these pictures because you’re looking directly to my soul. I’ve talked about a depression mood also in previous posts, for example analyzing Van Gogh and Munch. By the way this article is to remember, again one more time, that “YOU HAVE TO FIND YOUR PERSONAL VIEW ..read more
