Queen’s student efforts raise record funds for cancer research

Queen’s is celebrating a record setting donation from this year’s student led Cure Cancer Classic. The student organized fundraising initiative includes a number of flagship events, most notably the seventh annual Cure Cancer Classic rivalry hockey game between Engineering and Commerce students at Queen’s. This year’s rivalry game was hosted at Slush Puppie Place on March 14, and the event raised $338,344 after a dollar-for-dollar match through the Canadian Cancer Society. Kingston encampments see rash of fire safety issues as city prepares for daytime camping ban

Last week, the City of Kingston put out several statements regarding fire safety at the Belle Park Encampment. Kingston Fire & Rescue gave out a number of Immediate Threat to Life (ITL) notices at Belle Park last week, including issuing four notices in just one day on March 21 for infractions including open air flames within tents. On Friday night Kingston Fire & Rescue issued yet another ITL notice, this time with three people being transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Kingston Police have released a summary of actions taken from St. Patrick’s Day, and while a number of fines were handed out, many officers involved say it was one of the best in recent memory. Kyle Compeau, Manager of Enforcement at the City of Kingston, credited the student engagement with police liaison teams and by-law officers for the relatively smooth affairs. A group of Queen’s biology students are working on a project to raise awareness about the negative impacts outdoor pet cats have on biodiversity in their area. While many with pet cats think its relatively harmless to let them roam outside and come back, the students say that research makes clear the threat that cats have on birds and small animals in particular. The Grad Club has launched an emergency fundraising campaign to combat multiple factors that the Board of Directors say are causing unprecedented financial hardship. City of Kingston to enforce daytime camping ban

Starting April 2, the City of Kingston will be enforcing its Parks Use Bylaw (2009-76), meaning that tents and temporary shelters in parks must be disassembled before sunrise everyday and be erected no sooner than sundown. In a release, the city says the work begins today in a “respectful, safe, and empathetic manner”, with bylaw officers handing out notices to those currently residing in the Belle Park encampment.
