Ss Brewtech Unitank 2.0 Review
Hazy and Hoppy
by Shawn Williams
6M ago
The Unitank 2.0 by Ss Brewtech is a state-of-the-art fermenter that builds on their original unitank design. The original Ss unitank was one of the first fully functioning unitanks to hit the homebrewing market. Earlier this year, Ss Brewtech released an improved version of the same fermenter featuring a glycol jacket for temperature control, replacing the old cooling coil design. The glycol jacket is slowly becoming the gold standard for fermenter temperature control in homebrewing. While this has been the norm in commercial equipment for decades, submersible coils are much more affordable. W ..read more

Hazy and Hoppy

Brewtools has emerged as one of the leaders of the homebrewing industry, designing sophisticated brewing equipment with great attention to detail and excellent quality. I’ve been a distant admirer of the Brewtools line of fermenters since they first launched their initial sneak peek in 2021. In my quest to review every popular fermenter on the market, I absolutely had to see if this unitank lived up to my wild imagination. Brewtools offers 6 “F” model fermenters, supporting 5.2-76 gallons of wort. Today, I’ll be walking you through the F40 (40 liters), which is the smallest unit capable of fer ..read more

Spike Flow Brewing Pump Review
Hazy and Hoppy
by Shawn Williams

Spike Brewing generously provided the Flow Brewing Pump for the purposes of this review. Brewing pumps have often been an overlooked part of the brewing process. Moving several gallons of wort and water is no easy feat without a pump. While gravity works to an extent, most homebrewing setups require 1-2 pumps for the most efficient process. The Flow Brewing Pump is one of the latest accessories in Spike’s expanding product portfolio. A heavy-duty brew pump capable of moving 9GPM with 9.5 PSI of pressure, making it the most powerful pump at the homebrew scale. Let’s jump in. Product Overview Th ..read more

The Craft Master Uni: The Smallest Unitank For Homebrewing
Hazy and Hoppy

Craft Master Growlers provided The Uni in exchange for an honest product review. I recently got to ferment with arguably the world’s smallest functioning unitank fermenter. In 2022, Craft Master Growlers released a 1-gallon pressure-rated stainless steel unitank that features a true conical cone, dump valve, and sampling port. The init doubles as both a Pressurized Growler and fermenter, allowing you to both ferment and serve from a singular vessel with the ultimate degree of freshness. If you haven’t read my reviews on the CMG Keg Cap and Pressurized Growlers, you should give them a look If y ..read more

I Brewed Nate Lanier’s Tree House Style IPA
Hazy and Hoppy
by Shawn Williams

Nate Lanier, head brewer and co-founder of Tree House Brewing recently shared a Tree House-style IPA homebrew recipe. This recipe generated a lot of interest in the homebrew world as Tree House is obviously responsible for some of the top-rated IPAs in the world. As a student of beer and brewing, I had to try this recipe for myself and see if it was for real. I’m obsessed with the concept of recreating commercial-quality IPAs at the homebrew scale. And while there’s a lot of debate on whether or not it’s actually possible with the equipment and ingredients homebrewers have access to, I’ll neve ..read more

Spike Counterflow Wort Chiller Review
Hazy and Hoppy

The Spike Wort Chiller was generously provided by Spike Brewing in exchange for an honest review. The information below is my own unbiased opinion. Spike Brewing recently released a counterflow wort chiller. I had the opportunity to test the chiller out firsthand to see if it lived up to the hype. In my opinion, a counterflow chiller is one of the best investments you can make as a homebrewer. Their rapid chilling times paired with easy cleaning is a very hard combo to beat. For those of you that aren’t familiar, a counterflow chiller is designed to chill wort from hot side temps down to yeast ..read more

Nelson, Strata & El Dorado NEIPA
Hazy and Hoppy
by Shawn Williams

This recipe is inpired by one of my favorite Trillium beers from a few years back—a Nelson Sauvin, Strata, and El Dorado hop combo that initially turned me on to my love of brewing with Nelson. Nelson Sauvin has quickly become a favorite among NEIPA brewers. The hop provides tropical fruit, white wine grape and sublte peppery notes that I’ve come to crave. A single charge features a pound of hops split between 50% Nelson Sauvin and 25% each of Strata and El Dorado. The recipe borders on ripe tropical fruits, mango, pineapple, and that signature Nelson profile with a subtle peppery finish. A ne ..read more

Cleaning Your Brewing Equipment

If you’ve been homebrewing for a while you’re well aware that you spend almost as much time cleaning and sanitizing as you do brewing beer. If this doesn’t sound accurate to you, then this article is for you. Over the past few years, I’ve taken a good hard look at my cleaning and sanitation practices in order to make sure everything is up to par. Both hot and cold side equipment greatly benefits from a diligent cleaning regimen. Even though most hot side equipment is ‘boiled’, it’s important to clean it as if it’s actually not. Clean equipment produces clean flavors. Now I’ll be honest, there ..read more

TapCooler Counter Pressure Bottle Filler Review
Hazy and Hoppy
by Shawn Williams

The only downside of kegging homebrew is not being able to transport your beer as easily. While I don’t miss bottling 50 beers with every batch, I do miss the convenience of grabbing a 4-pack and heading out the door. Sharing homebrew with friends and family is one of the most rewarding parts of the hobby. There are a few products on the market designed to bottle fully carbonated homebrew directly from a keg. Having previous hands-on experience with both the WilliamsWarn BrewBottler and Blichmann BeerGun has allowed me to trial a few different types of fillers. When it comes to filling bottles ..read more

Coastal Vibes American IPA Recipe
Hazy and Hoppy
by Shawn Williams
1y ago
This American IPA recipe features a classic grist of pale malt, light Munich malt, white wheat malt, and crystal 20. This recipe was originally inspired by Mast Landing’s Neon Sails IPA. While it’s not a true clone, I used the same hops to offer a balance of tropical fruits, citrus, and pine. I love this recipe because it’s a very citrus-forward take on an American IPA. One may call it the gateway into how the hazy New England IPAs were born. If you remove the boil additions, add a second dry hop charge, and switch to a London III strain, you might as well call it a hazy IPA. This IPA features ..read more
