Online Investment Advice

There's an abundance of online investment advice and while some may be good, some are far from good as this photo shows quite clearly. I don't recall what site I found this at but I think we'd all agree that the American Bankers Association didn't provide it. It would be nice if this advice was good and that we could apportion each dollar as the poster showed but I have yet to find a way to divide a dollar into four 30% allocations ..read more

Don't Expect Too Much

This photo is of myself, my wife, and a good friend at Yellowstone that was taken by a stranger who offered to get a photo of the three of us. The young teen girl wasn't about to move and it's what I consider the perfect representation of a kid being somewhere they didn't care to be. While we visited Yellowstone I noticed many grandparents brought their grandkids along with them. The one consistent observation I was able to make was that these kids were bored as can be and pretty much dragged themselves along. They were not enjoying this time with their grandparents, don't expect yours to be ..read more

Investment Management

When preparing for retirement, or already retired, it's important to use an excellent investment manager. We've gone through a few since we retired and cashed out of the employer plan. Below you can see a scan of our quarterly statement from a company we are no longer using. We switched investment managers in July 2008 and this statement was delivered in July 2021. For thirteen years we've been receiving a statement showing the same twenty-six-cents value. Fifty-two statements costing fifty-six cents to mail alone is silly, doing it for 13 years is absurd. Obviously, this company doesn't run a ..read more

Retiring to Florida
Living in the Slow Lane » Retirement

The common view of Florida is that it's a retirement state which is quite accurate and obvious when visiting many parts of the state. My wife and I are among the those that retired to South Florida. "In Season" is when the snowbirds, holiday vacationers and students on Spring Break all head to Florida. The population bulge lasts from mid December to mid April as people seek to get away from the cold and seek the warmth found throughout most of the state. This period is well-known for a lot of people on the roads, restaurants and beaches. Residents typically complain about this surge of people ..read more

Living in the Slow Lane is my stay-at-home project as we all deal with the pandemic which has put a hold on all our activities. We all should be limiting what we're doing to help end this mess but, to date, that's far from reality as it continues to spread. This is about retirement, photography, Southwest Florida, aging, health, and whatever else I decide to share. In 2018, my wife Barb and I moved to Southwest Florida from Colorado for health reasons, as do so many other retirees. While it was hard putting so many miles between ourselves and our children and gran ..read more
