On Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at around 9:00 P.M. Oxnard police officers responded to the area of Date Street and Pine Street regarding a shooting that had just occurred. Officers contacted the intended victim, a 45-year-old Oxnard resident, who stated he had just been shot at by a male suspect. The victim was not struck by gunfire and was uninjured. On Friday, April 19th, at approximately 7:30 p.m., officers from the Oxnard Special Enforcement Unit (Gang Unit) observed a juvenile, documented criminal street gang member in a parked vehicle. The officers recognized the juvenile, 16-year-old male Oxnard resident and knew the juvenile to be on probation for firearms possession. Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko announced that Cameron Scott Lykins, a 28-year-old man from Ojai, pled guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter for the death of his friend, Houston Auer. Lykins also admitted to several special allegations and aggravating factors, including that he used a deadly weapon and had strike priors. On May 12, 2019, Lykins bludgeoned Mr. Auer with a sledgehammer. The killing happened in Mr. Auer’s bedroom at his grandmother’s home, in Ojai.
