Playoffs beckon. The lottery awaits. Now is the time to play with no fear

City have all but secured a playoff spot. Okay, it isn’t mathematically guaranteed yet but it is hard to imagine a scenario where Norwich don’t finish the job at Birmingham. A three-point lead on seventh-placed Hull is all-importantly backed up by a considerably healthier goal difference on the Tigers. An eight-goal swing on the final day with Hull travelling to Plymouth seems an impossible outcome. But how funny it is that we relied on those noisy neighbours of ours to do us a favour. I can’t say that I was actively cheering for the Tractor Boys – I could never bring myself to do such a thing ..read more

One Sara masterclass later and City on the cusp of the playoffs

Even Norwich City couldn’t screw it up from here. Could they? That said, multi-goal swings do occur on the final day. Just ask Nottingham Forest or Bristol Rovers. And, of course, none of us can ever forget Craven Cottage in May 2005 as much as we’d like to. Maybe best to not overthink it and let nature take its course. That we’re in pole position to claim fifth place has more to do with others than ourselves. Two chances, both at home, to have claimed those two extra points that would have put it to bed have been spurned. Instead, off the back of the Ipswich win, at home we have had 180+ minu ..read more

MATCH REPORT: CITY 2, SWANSEA 2
My Football Writer

Usually the last regular home game of the season has something of a carnival atmosphere. Bright sunshine, everyone out in short sleeves and, usually, little to play for. Contrast that to a chilly Carrow Road and the promise of all but wrapping up a play-off place for City. Only the Player of the Season award to remind the packed crowd that this could be their last chance to see some of these players. There was one change from the previous weeks. Ashley Barnes was dropped with Christian Fassnacht coming in on the right and Gabriel Sara moving infield to support Josh Sargent. No one co ..read more

ACADEMY: The U18s now playing their best football of the season

It’s been a difficult time for the academy but the recent performance levels of the U18s team have been refreshing. And over the last few days, they have enjoyed a brief spell of success – beating both Tottenham (2-0) and West Brom (3-0). Not only did they show their quality in winning those two games but they also managed two clean sheets, which will have given the defence a massive confidence boost.  Two defenders, in particular, who have massively impressed in those two games are the central pairing of Gabriel Keita and Alfie Doy. With Alfie having suffered injuries throughout the camp ..read more

The Preview: Norwich City v Swansea City

Luke Williams’ Swansea City make the long journey to Carrow Road tomorrow as David Wagner’s side welcome the Swans for their final home game of the regular season. A win for the Canaries guarantees them a spot in the play-offs.  Norwich walked away empty-handed from the Swansea.com Stadium in October, suffering a 2-1 defeat, thanks to goals from Jamal Lowe and Chelsea loanee Bashir Humphreys.  Going even further back, the last time the two sides faced off at Carrow Road was just over a year ago when former Canary Russell Martin was in charge. Martin’s men demolished Wagner’s side 3-0 ..read more

Finally! EFL checks on Norfolk Group are complete and we move forward

It has to have been one of the most prolonged ‘takeovers’ in the history of football. Except it wasn’t even a takeover. It was merely the approval of a share issue – one that gives Mark Attanasio and his Norfolk Group parity of ownership with Delia and Michael.   As ever, our friends at the Canaries Trust were on the case, and were acutely aware that questions were being asked of the process and why it took so long. On April 9, they issued the following update: “We are aware that there is concern about the delay in approval of the share issue to Norfolk Group – having spoken to the Club w ..read more

Still so many questions and what-ifs regarding Mr Wagner

The Wagner debate roars on among the City fanbase. After an appalling mid-season run, the German has seemingly turned his and his side’s fortunes around, propelling them ahead of the chasing pack and needing three more points to secure one of those final two playoff spots.  After a frustrating draw at home to in-form Bristol City, the Wagner debate reared its ugly head once again on social media. I hope to use this article to try and make some sense of where I am regarding Wagner, and where his future should lie because to be quite frank, right now I have no clue.  I was very open ac ..read more

Can Norwich City afford to be in the Championship next season?

It’s a conundrum. As it stands both scenarios are eminently possible. It’s looking increasingly likely that we will be in the playoffs, but from there, who knows? The scuttlebutt from ‘sources’ is that the club is £90m in the red, but that the debt is covered by Mark Anastassio as a private, not a public, debt. Be that as it may, that’s a load of moolah but, hey, promotion via the playoffs is worth gazillions. Well, at least enough to theoretically cover the debt and still leave some spending money. Quite how much spending money is not clear but let’s say it’s £50million. That might just ..read more

And then there were three. Games left that is. Unless we make it to the playoffs, and then there will be five… or even six. You know what I mean. But, as we’ve learned from bitter experience, it’s deadly to count your chickens in this game, especially at this stage of the season. The unknowns and how-did-that-happens come at you fast. In terms of what we do know, two wins from City’s final three games should be enough for sixth place and a rare tilt at the playoffs. I say two wins because even if Hull win all four of their remaining games – one of them is against Coventry – and City win two, d ..read more

ACADEMY: Weaver departs. Chance now for a new broom and a reset
My Football Writer

It’s been tough for the academy throughout the second half of the season, with the U18s and U21s teams both experiencing difficulties. With a rebuild needed on the pitch, one will also now be required behind the scenes after the head of academy development, Steve Weaver, announced he was leaving the club at the end of this season.  Weaver has been in the position for seven seasons and has played an integral part in developing a significant number of players who have made it through into City’s first team. In total, 24 players have made that transition, including Max Aarons, Jamal Lewis, J ..read more
