A couple of months back, I decided to appear for the INI-SS Medical Genetics exam. I googled for information from people who cleared this exam before to get an orientation about the exam. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any. However, later I got the contacts of two genetics residents of AIIMS Delhi and PGI Chandigarh and they told me the high-yielding topics which eventually helped me to crack the exam. Medical Genetics is one such exam in which the candidates need to do a bit of focused preparation to score well. A major chunk of questions come out of Nelson and the aspirants usually find it ..read more

Homeopathy is a pseudoscientific medical stream that originated in Germany. According to the principles of homeopathy, a substance that causes symptoms of a disease in healthy people can cure similar symptoms in sick people (similia similibus curentur). Homeopathic remedies (medicines) are prepared by diluting the active ingredient multiple times so much so that it becomes inert. Randomized controlled trials which were published in renowned medical journals have proven beyond doubt that homeopathy has no effects. This has led to countries withdrawing their funds invested in this branch of alt ..read more

Two days back, Dr. Archana Sharma committed suicide because of the harassment by the bystanders of the patient who died at her hospital. She was a post-graduate in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (the branch which covers pregnancy and the female reproductive system) and she had won various accolades during her student and consultant days. However, she found herself in trouble when one of her patients, whom she treated at her hospital, died due to postpartum hemorrhage (bleeding from the birth canal after delivery). The bystanders of the patient created a ruckus at the hospital, which was owned by ..read more

A few days back, a video went viral on social media in which a resident doctor (a doctor who is undergoing post-graduation / PG doctor) was shouting at the bystander of a patient. The person who took the video conveniently omitted the footage in which the bystander provoked the doctor which resulted in that verbal altercation. As usual, the social media users showered abuse against that PG doctor and some even went to the extent of demanding his dismissal. Without even forming an inquiry committee, that doctor was suspended for a few days by the hospital administration in order to satisfy the ..read more

The battle against COVID-19 is far from over and we know that. We realized the hard way that, if we don’t learn from history, history will keep on repeating again and again. The second wave of Spanish flu (1918) was way more deadly than the first wave; however, we didn’t learn. We were cautious in the first wave, nevertheless, we thought that the war was over when cases decreased. By the end of their internship a few undergraduate medical students would have decided on their favorite branch for residency, based on the limited experience that they had during their internship. A few others would have decided on whether to go into a surgical or non-surgical field, even though they might not be able to pinpoint their favorite branch, and the remaining are mostly clueless people. By the end of my internship, I was quite interested in Internal Medicine (IM) and wanted to pursue the same for my residency. I wasn’t very confident about my surgical skills and I wanted a non-surg ..read more

Being a parent is a huge responsibility. The parents and their family have to sacrifice a lot to take care of the baby. This is such a responsibility, which most of the parents will enjoy but will consume most of, if not all, of their leisure time. It’s a responsibility which will test your patience. Being a resident doctor working at Pediatrics, I have seen numerous anxious mothers, who come up with trivial complaints. Most of the parents are well aware of the duration of exclusive breast feeding, importance of weight gain etc. which actually makes our job easy. But, I have seen a few misconc ..read more
