The Denver Broncos have a storied history of accomplished running backs. The team’s list of all-time leading rushers is highlighted by a pair of Pro Football Hall of Famers in Terrell Davis and Floyd Little. The first non-running back to appear on the list is Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, who racked up 3,407 rushing yards during his 16-year career with the Broncos. Clinton Portis ranks eighth on the list despite playing just two seasons in Denver, which is a reflection of just how impressive his Broncos tenure was before the team traded him to acquire cornerback Champ Bailey. We’ve reached No. 28 in our series of the best players to ever wear each jersey number for the Denver Broncos, and there’s no Hall of Famer this time. A host of running backs have worn that number in Denver, recently including Latavius Murray, Damarea Crockett, Royce Freeman, Jamaal Charles, Montee Ball, Correll Buckhalter and Michael Pittman. The best player to ever don No. 28, though, was a hard-hitting safety. Kenoy Kennedy played for the Broncos from 2000-2004. He was drafted by Denver in the second round of the 2000 NFL draft out of Arkansas. Although he never made a Pro Bowl or All-Pro r ..read more

As we continue our series listing the best players to wear each jersey number for the Denver Broncos, we’ve reached another easy number. Steve Atwater was the best player to ever wear No. 27 for the Broncos, and there’s no argument to be made otherwise. Atwater was picked by the Broncos in the first round of the 1989 NFL draft out of Arkansas. He went on to spend the next 10 seasons in Denver, earning eight Pro Bowl nods and three AP All-Pro selections. Atwater won back-to-back Super Bowls with the Broncos in the late 1990s before playing the final year of his career with the New York Jets. He ..read more

Denver Broncos' top-12 leaders on team's all-time receiving list

Rod Smith was the best wide receiver in Denver Broncos history, and the numbers back that up.  Smith ranks No. 1 on the team’s all-time receiving list for yards (11,389) and receiving touchdowns (68). A two-time Super Bowl champion, Smith deserves a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  Right behind Smith is the late Demaryius Thomas, who totaled 9,055 receiving yards and scored 60 touchdowns. Three years after setting a then-record with 13 receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown in Super Bowl XLVIII, Thomas helped the Broncos win Super Bowl 50 in 2015. He also has a case for the ..read more

Darian Stewart deserves a shoutout as one of the best players to ever wear No. 26 for the Denver Broncos. The safety played in Denver from 2015-2018, helping the team win Super Bowl 50 during his first season. The best player to ever wear No. 26 for the Broncos, though, was former running back Clinton Portis. Denver picked Portis in the second round of the 2002 NFL draft out of Miami. He went on to win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award after totaling 1,872 yards from scrimmage and scoring 17 touchdowns in 2002. In his second season, Portis totaled 1,905 scrimmage yards and scored 14 t ..read more

Who was the best player to ever wear No. 25 for the Broncos?

We’ve reached No. 25 in our series of the best players to ever wear each jersey number for the Denver Broncos, and we’re facing a tough decision. Recency bias would suggest Chris Harris is an obvious choice, but older Broncos fans who remember Haven Moses might object to that notion. Let’s take a quick glance at the resumes of both players. After spending the first five years of his career with the Buffalo Bills, Moses played in Denver from 1972-1981. A one-time AFL All-Star and one-time Pro Bowler, Moses ranks ninth in franchise history with 5,450 receiving yards and fifth with 44 receiving t ..read more

Broncos’ top-10 all-time leaders in passing yards

When looking at the Denver Broncos’ list of all-time leaders in passing yards, the pass-happy nature of the modern NFL is quite apparent.  Five of the quarterbacks in the top 10 played after the 2000s (and one played during). It only took Peyton Manning four seasons to jump into second place on Denver’s all-time list. Granted, Manning is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, but other QBs with short tenures in Denver also make the list.  Jake Plummer played three and a half seasons with the Broncos and he’s fifth. Jay Cutler played three years and he’s sixth. Kyle Orton also ..read more

We’ve reached No. 24 in our series of the best players to wear each jersey number for the Denver Broncos, and this one is an easy decision. Before we get to the best ever to wear No. 24, former running back Otis Armstrong deserves an honorable mention. Armstrong spent his entire career with the Broncos from 1973-1980. He earned two Pro Bowl nods and a first-team All-Pro honor during his time in Denver. Armstrong’s 4,453 rushing yards rank fourth in franchise history and his 25 rushing touchdowns rank eighth in Broncos history. He was one of the best RBs in team history, but not the best t ..read more

As we continue our series of the best player to wear each jersey number for the Denver Broncos, we’ve reached No. 23. Former running back Sammy Winder deserves an honorable mention as a two-time Pro Bowler who spent his entire career in Denver (1982-1990). Late running back Ronnie Hillman, who helped the team win Super Bowl 50 in 2015, deserves recognition as well. But safety Goose Gonsoulin is an easy choice as the best player to ever wear jersey No. 23 for the Broncos. The Denver Broncos have a great history of strong-legged kickers, and given the nature of the position, it’s no surprise that the team’s all-time scoring list is topped by kickers. The NFL does not count quarterback points on all-time scoring lists (presumably because QBs are responsible for so many touchdowns). If they did, John Elway would be Denver’s all-time leader in points (4,771). Instead, Broncos Ring of Fame kicker Jason Elam is officially recognized as Denver’s all-time scoring leader (1,786 points). A two-time Super Bowl champion, three-time Pro Bowler and three-time second-team All ..read more
