Pikes Peak is getting ‘trashed’ by overuse and blatant disregard for the environment
Greeley Tribune
by John Meyer

As most Coloradans know, the lyrics to “America the Beautiful” were inspired by a trek to the summit of Pikes Peak via prairie wagon in 1893. But when Katharine Lee Bates penned a poem called “Pikes Peak,” which became an American anthem after it was set to music in 1910, she could scarcely have imagined the great mountain becoming a trash heap. Outdoor recreation advocates fear that’s precisely what is happening to the majestic 14,107-foot peak that soars above Colorado Springs, along with the surrounding Pike National Forest. “We’re trashing America’s Mountain,” says Susan Davies, executive ..read more

Patty Damon can see St. Anthony Hospital’s Lakewood campus from her house, but starting in May, she may not be able to go there any longer without digging deep into her pockets. Damon has insurance through Anthem BlueCross BlueShield of Colorado, which is in a dispute with St. Anthony’s owner CommonSpirit Health. If the two can’t reach an agreement by May 1, CommonSpirit’s 10 Colorado hospitals will no longer be in-network for the 1.5 million people covered by Anthem health plans in this state. When a health care facility goes out-of-network, patients can still opt to receive care there, but t ..read more

Jordan and Taryn Bennett took advantage of low mortgage rates during the pandemic to snag a condo in the Uptown neighborhood. But they need more space with a dog in residence and a child on the way. Interest rates, rather than helping them, are blocking them this time around. The young couple, both 30, are turning to a newer type of housing product known as “build-to-rent,” or BTR, for some flexibility  They zeroed in on an infill townhome community called Dominic Row in Denver’s popular Highlands neighborhood, before deciding to move into a rental home near Sloans Lake. “People like us d ..read more

Greeley Tribune
by Amy Dickinson

Dear Amy: My brother and I are both in our 70s. We’ve only spoken once in the last three years. We lived miles apart for much of our lives, but still kept in touch. After our father passed, our mother sold their home. My father had previously told my brother that when they sold the house, he wanted to give a certain amount of money to each of us. Our mother did not honor our father’s wishes, but did give us each a smaller amount. Years later she deposited a good sum of money into his account but asked him not to tell me. (I wouldn’t have cared at all.) Mom later called the bank and asked for t ..read more

As the Rockies take on the Astros in the 2024 Mexico City Series this weekend, Vinny Castilla is a legend coming home. The former Blake Street Bomber, now a special assistant to Rockies general manager Bill Schmidt, is arguably the most famous Mexican-born big league position player in MLB history. He’s also his native country’s most accomplished, as Mexico’s MLB career leader in homers (320), doubles (349), hits (1,884), runs (902) and RBIs (1,105). “I’m sure Vinny’s going to be treated like the mayor on our trip,” third baseman Ryan McMahon quipped. “Everyone knows he’s beloved back there. Once an Avalanche killer, Joel Kiviranta is showing his value as a depth player
Greeley Tribune
by Corey Masisak

A few weeks ago, it was hard to find a place for Joel Kiviranta in the postseason lineup for the Colorado Avalanche. A few days into this opening-round series with the Winnipeg Jets, it’s hard to see Jared Bednar filling out one without him in it. Kiviranta was probably going to be the 13th forward for the Avs, but a lower-body injury to Jonathan Drouin created an opportunity for him, and he’s taken full advantage. He’s fit seamlessly next to Ross Colton and Miles Wood on the club’s third line, and that trio had back-to-back strong games together going into Game 3 at Ball Arena. “I wouldn’t sa ..read more
