Students at Blake Manor Elementary School are like those at any other elementary school. They love to learn, to play, to be with their friends. Their parents are hopeful for their future and want the best for them. However, students at Blake Manor Elementary experience more barriers than many kids. Attending a Title 1 school, on average, their families are paid low wages or are underemployed, some experience housing insecurity, and 90 percent of students at Blake Manor qualify for free lunch. The wonders of marine life are what drove Troop 27283’s passion for their Bronze Award. With their sights set on one day becoming marine biologists, penguinologists, animal rights lawyers, and more, they were ready to see how they could make a difference. The first step was learning more about the world their favorite animals lived in. One of the wonderful things about being a Girl Scout volunteer is the endless number of opportunities available to you. Sometimes, especially if you’re a new troop leader, that infinite number can feel overwhelming. This year, we celebrate Girl Scouts of Central Texas’s centennial—100 years since the first troop formed in the Central Texas area. A lot has changed over the last one hundred years. Just look at our legacy badges (Dairy Maid Badge, anyone?) compared to today’s lineup for one example. It was a cloudy day, but Francis lit up the room with smiles as she carefully made her way through the door. After 69 years, the 93-year-old former troop leader wasted no time in recognizing the grown Girl Scouts who stood before her. “Do you know who this is,” the Girl Scout alums from Troop 10 asked. Adapting to the new environment, Girl Scouts got creative, learned new digital skills, and conquered the challenge of getting the beloved treats into their customer’s hands.
