Fleur had the pleasure of speaking with Leila Seyedzadeh about her life and work. Seyedzadeh is an Iranian interdisciplinary artist based in New York. She creates imaginary landscapes with a sense of placelessness. Seyedzadeh focuses on natural subjects such as mountains extracted from her subconscious. It is as if she is attaching pieces of her memories, and in so doing, destroying their meaning. Seyedzadeh received her MFA from Yale University School of Art in 2019 and completed artist residencies at Nars and NYFA in New York and at SOMA in Mexico City. “I grew up in a family where there wer ..read more

When we think of art, we tend to think of it in high places. We see it in museums, galleries, and luxurious homes. We tend to think of art as being out of reach. But what if it were within reach? What if art were part of daily life? What if we had art in apartments? There’s more art out there than you think. There are innumerable, talented artists looking to connect with art lovers and share their work. That’s true for established collectors and that’s true for first-time patrons renting their first apartments. The art world is bigger than we think (Article: A Bigger, Better Art World), becaus ..read more

Our mission is to build a bigger, better art world. At Fleur, we believe that art is essential. It’s a fundamental part of the human experience, so why can’t everyone engage with art on a daily basis? Why isn’t art radically accessible in the digital age? Everyone has a favorite platform where they go to discover music and musicians. Where can they go to discover art and artists?  That’s our mission. At Fleur, we want everyone to engage with art on a daily basis. We want more art in people’s lives. We believe that technology, like the curation algorithms and artificial intelligence we’re ..read more

It’s a paradox: technology can make art more human. It’s a paradox because technology can feel inhuman. We’re more connected than ever because of tech, but we’re also less connected than ever. Art can feel inhuman, too. Many of us feel uncomfortable walking into an art gallery, let alone asking questions about the art or expressing our opinions. Traditional arts spaces make you feel like you don’t have your own taste in art. But you do. They make you feel like your tastes don’t matter. But they do. You know what you want (Article: You Know What You Want), and that’s what’s important. We all en ..read more

What Is Technology?
Passage Arts

What is technology? It’s technique. It’s no accident that these words sound so similar. They both come from the Greek word tékhnē, which means skill. Technique is all about skill. It’s the way in which you do something. Skillful artists have techniques. Skillful coders do too. Technology is the study of skills. If etymology is the study of words, then technology is the careful, deliberate study of skills. When we think of technology, we tend to think of computers and other high-tech, mechanical things. But technology is more than that. It’s technique. It’s downright artistic. The words technol ..read more

You know what you want. You have your own taste in music. You have your own taste in clothes. You have your own taste in TV. But when it comes to art, you’ve been made to feel like you can’t trust yourself. You’ve probably been made to feel like your taste in art doesn’t matter. But it does. You’ve probably felt like you can’t express your opinions in a gallery. But you know what you want. You should trust your taste in art. We all engage with art in one way or another. So, all day, every day, you develop tastes that are unique to you. You develop a sense of what you want in art just by being ..read more

Encoding Inclusion

Today’s art world is famously exclusionary. It’s known for being closed to most people, but the situation is actually worse than you think. In 2017, Artnet News reported that top New York galleries represented 70% male artists and only 30% women artists. They reported that the same galleries represented 80% white artists and only 20% artists of color. 20% of the artists the top galleries represented that year went to the prestigious Ivy League university, Yale. So in 2017, Yale grads were as well-represented at top New York galleries as all artists of color. The situation hasn’t improved much ..read more
