We are officially under two months away from the 2024 NHL Draft. With the Flames currently holding four picks in the first two rounds of the draft, they’re set to add a huge haul to the current prospect pool. With the team needing help at seemingly every position outside of goaltender, the organization is likely to target just about every position at the draft this year. With that in mind, it’s worth looking at the last time the Flames drafted each position in the first two rounds of the NHL draft. Flames first-round picks by position Centre – 2020, Connor Zary (24th) You’d have to go back to ..read more

After making his long-awaited return, Calgary Flames defenceman Oliver Kylington has been voted a finalist for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. This nomination recognises the player “best exemplifying perseverance, sportsmanship, dedication to hockey.” Kylington’s a finalist along with Frederik Andersen (Carolina Hurricanes) and Connor Ingram (Arizona Coyotes). Kylington’s triumphant return Kylington had what most would call a breakout season in 2021–22. Playing mostly alongside Chris Tanev, the pair was excellent throughout the season and was one of the best pairings in the league in term ..read more

The finalists for the Calder Trophy for the NHL’s top rookie of the 2023–24 season were announced earlier this week, and once again the Calgary Flames did not have a player in the top three of voting this year. Many of us thought there might be an outside chance that Connor Zary might get a nod after stealing the show for the Flames when he was called up in early November, but he was left off the top three. Despite that, the Flames have a really nice piece in Zary, and he showed loads of potential this year in his first NHL season. Zary is going to be an extremely important player moving forw ..read more

Potential trade destinations for Jacob Markstrom if the Flames move him

The marriage between the Calgary Flames and Jacob Markstrom seems to be coming to an end. Between the ongoing speculation and trade rumours, Markstrom’s strong words following the trade deadline, his comments at the locker cleanout day at the end of the season, and simply the direction of this team, it seems like the Flames are going to be in the market to move on from this era. This feels like a move that will happen in the coming weeks prior to the NHL draft on at the draft as the Flames will likely be looking for future help in the form of draft picks. Given GM Craig Conroy‘s comments that ..read more

Keep or trade: What the Calgary Flames should do with Andrei Kuzmenko?

Expectations entering the 2023-24 season were high despite a frustrated Calgary Flames organization parting ways with Head Coach Darryl Sutter and General Manager Brad Treliving after a colossally disappointing end to the 2022-23 season. Their replacements, Ryan Huska and Craig Conroy respectively, came into this season with playoff aspirations, goals to give younger players opportunities, and enter the 2023-24 season with all pending UFA’s either re-signed or dealt for future assets. Despite a post season absence for the second straight year, some unlikely heroes emerged within the Flames li ..read more

The Flames are in a rebuilding stage, however, they have some tough decisions to make with some of their players. Yegor Sharangovich took the team by storm and became one of the team’s best goal scorers. Andrei Kuzmenko, who was included as return in the Elias Lindholm trade as a cap dump, became one of the best point producing forwards on the Flames roster. Andrew Mangiapane had a down year offensively, however provided steady defensive results as he always has. And lastly, Jacob Markstrom was putting up great goaltending numbers until two of the top 4 defencemen on the roster were traded aw ..read more

The Calgary Flames are in the midst of a re-tool on the fly, aiming to get younger and more skilled to complement some of the larger contracts on their roster right now. Looking at the roster, there are some players who cannot be moved easily due to their contract structure and performance, and there are a number of young players that you want to include as part of your core going forward. Then there are the tweeners, the guys drafted in the mid 2010s, who are approaching 30 but have not been signed to high-value contracts, and will be too old to be part of the team’s next young core and can ..read more

Keep or trade: What the Calgary Flames should do with Yegor Sharangovich

The Calgary Flames are no doubt heading into a very busy offseason after a disappointing year relative to their renewed expectations after last year’s disaster. The team failed to make the playoffs for the second year in a row, and while the team enters a retooling or rebuilding phase (whatever you want to call it), everybody will be on the table when it comes to a potential trade or contract extension if they are eligible for it. One player who made waves this season for all the right reasons, Yegor Sharangovich, will be able to sign a new contract extension with the Flames as of July 1. Wit ..read more
