Movie Review: Civil War
A Screenwriters Perspective

One of the craziest parts about the new movie “Civil War” is how for an entire two hours, with a story about photo journalists covering a major Civil War in the United States – between the East and the West is that there is not one single second devoted to the most important issue – why is there a Civil War going on? What caused a war like this to happen? How long has it been going on? What does each side believe? Have there been attempts at peace? Amazingly, none of these most important issues were ever addressed during the entire movie. This entire story is about a series of scenes where 4 j ..read more

Movie Review: Farewell, Mr. Haffmann
A Screenwriters Perspective
by jjcwn

In the history of movies, there has never been a more produced and written about subject than World War II. Some of these movies have been war movies, others about the Hallocaust and others stories like this one about the plight of so many ordinary people in the path of a huge world war, started by Nazi Germany in 1938. The story of the new French movie “Farewell, Mr. Haffmann” is about a Jewish jeweler in Paris France who is hidden in the basement of one of his employees and his wife when the Germans take over France. The hope is once the conflict subsides, he can escape France and be with hi ..read more

Movie Review: Monkey Man
A Screenwriters Perspective

The new movie “Monkey Man” is one of those mistakenly highly rated Rotten Tomatoes movies that fools too many of us to see a new film that we would never see were it not for the high rating. Monkey Man is about an Indian man in his 30s who is so far down on his luck, within the slums of Mumbai India that he tries to make money by being beaten up in boxing matches where he is wearing a monkey mask. One could argue that no main character within any voilent action movie takes more punches to the face than Kid, played by Dev Patel. What does not make sense is why the damage to his face and body is ..read more

Movie Review: Someone Like You
A Screenwriters Perspective

The new movie “Someone Like You” is from the best-selling book with the same title, written by Karen Kinsbury. This is a tear-jerker type of film that we have all seen before, and most of what happens is predictable, but it is performed and told well enough to receive a solid recommendation. The other reason to like this film is because of the cast, starting with relative newcomer Sarah Fisher, who plays London Quin. Fischer has a face and a radiant smile that is so likeable and relatable that her appearance on screen alone, practically steals this entire movie. The premise of this story is bo ..read more

Movie Review: In the Land of Saints and Sinners
A Screenwriters Perspective
by jjcwn

Around this time every year, the movie-going world expects the release of another Liam Neeson film. This yearly movie tradition has been going on ever since the release of the outstanding film “Taken”, which came out in 2008 and is one of the best action movies of its kind, ever produced. The fact that Taken was so perfect for Neeson and has not happened again, is all about how difficult it is to write a great screenplay and then have it performed by the exact right lead actor. The next two Taken sequels were nowhere near the exceptional quality of the original with the last version a bad film ..read more

Movie Review: Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire
A Screenwriters Perspective

If any moviegoer of the latest Godzilla movie, “Movie Review: Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire”, after seeing this giant mess were to be asked about the story, or his/her understanding of what they saw during these two hours; to a person, they would have no clue. This disaster of a film is nothing more than pre-canned computer-generated action scenes involving King Kong, and Godzilla, that were thrown together making a total of 2 hours of another forgettable and bad action movie. Unfortunately, this process of making bad action films seems to be the latest trend in the movie industry, including ..read more

Movie Review: One Life
A Screenwriters Perspective

The new movie “One Life” starring Anthony Hopkins as Sir Nicholas Winton is another World War II story that I am surprised has not been a major film in the past. Nicholas Winton was a young London broker who visited Prague Czechoslovakia in December 1938 right before the Nazis were about to invade and take over the country. Winton took it upon himself to rescue hundreds of child refugees in Czechoslovakia from the extreme cold and the oncoming Nazi occupation. His plan was to send all of the children to safety in England, providing them shelter and whenever possible, foster homes. The logistic ..read more

Amazon Prime Movie Review: Road House
A Screenwriters Perspective
by jjcwn

In the entire history of Cable TV, the 1989 movie “Road House” has probably been telecast more than any other movie, despite the fact that the entire movie is not only bad, but ridiciulous. The ending included several scenes of murder by main character James Dalton, played by the late Patrick Swayze, one witnessed by his girlfriend Dr. Elizabeth Clay, played by Kelly Lynch and the abrupt ending included Dalton and his doctor girlfriend hugging in a lake. All is forgiven? No police or an arrest? This entire movie, while still bad, has become a major cult film and because of this ongoing popular ..read more

Movie Review: Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
A Screenwriters Perspective

One would have thought, that the producers and owners of the Ghostbusters franchise that started in 1984 – 40 years ago, would have learned from the low ratings of the last movie “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”, released in late 2021 that it was time to try and save this franchise before it was too late. Unfortunately the latest, and hopefully last installment, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is even worse than the last film. What is most tragic is that everybody knows that the first Ghostbusters movie and the second one, released in 1989 were both good movies. Given that the screenwriters and produce ..read more

Movie Review: Love Lies Bleeding
A Screenwriters Perspective
by jjcwn
1M ago
Squalor, a miserable terrible job, homelessness, a bleak and poor future, and extreme depression are all realities that are the beginning of the new movie “Love Lies Bleeding”. This movie starts with the main character Lou, played by Kristen Stewart, with her arm (while wearing rubber gloves) inside a disgusting clogged toilet bowl trying to fix the clog. Perhaps the dilapidated gym she was working in did not have a plunger? This first scene sets the tone of this movie, which is shocking, at times disgusting, vile, and all about the lowest levels of humanity, including even homelessness. The s ..read more
