Bruins Diehards

With opening night less than a week away, the Boston Bruins’ blue line will look very different than just a few months ago. With the departures of Zdeno Chara and Torey Krug, Kevan Miller is now the longest-tenured defenseman on the roster. The Los Angeles native has spent seven seasons in Boston but has not appeared in an NHL game since April of 2019 due to a broken kneecap. After a lengthy recovery process, Miller has arrived at training camp determined to earn a spot in the lineup. Before Miller’s injury during the 2018-19 season, the 33-year-old had seven assists in 39 games. He has been a ..read more

The Time Is Now for the Boston Bruins’ Defensive Youth
Bruins Diehards

Lost in what was the most turbulent Boston Bruins offseason in a half-decade is the fact that they remain one of the top teams in the NHL. Stalwarts like Zdeno Chara and Torey Krug, who are largely accountable for Boston’s noteworthy defensive successes are gone, sure. But successfully addressing their secondary scoring woes should outshine the loss of their 43-year-old captain and top powerplay quarterback. {new} Over 3 seasons, a Grzelcyk-McAvoy pairing has logged 505 even-strength minutes. In that stretch, Boston leads in: – Shot attempts: 551-390 – Scoring chances: 280-184 – Goals: 32 ..read more

The Boston Bruins announced Thursday that they have named Patrice Bergeron the 20th captain in franchise history. Who saw this coming? Oh yeah, everyone did. The legacy continues.#NHLBruins pic.twitter.com/t76NqIcoQd — Boston Bruins (@NHLBruins) January 7, 2021 After Zdeno Chara’s departure to the Washington Capitals, it was a no-brainer to select Bergeron as the next player to wear the C. Chara served as captain for 14 years since signing with the Bruins in 2006. Bergeron is entering his 17th season with the Bruins this year. Bergeron has a 2011 Stanley Cup, a 2012-2013 ..read more

Boston Bruins: Vaakanainen With a Golden Opportunity
Bruins Diehards
by Jamie Gatlin

Over the last few years, Urho Vaakanainen has become a familiar name for Boston Bruins fans. The Finnish native has been one of the Bruins’ top prospects and has appeared in seven games for the Bruins over the past two years. While Vaakanainen has been unable to secure a permanent role, he will have a golden opportunity in 2020-21. With Zdeno Chara and Torey Krug’s departures in free agency, Boston will need Vaakanainen to step up. While the NHL has been on pause, Vaakanainen has made the best of an extended offseason. The 2017 first-round pick appeared in two games for SaiPa of the Finnish Li ..read more

Thoughts on the Upcoming Boston Bruins Season
Bruins Diehards
by Ethan Nash

With the 2020-21 NHL season just two short weeks away from puck drop, and a Boston sports legend having just signed elsewhere, I thought it might be a good time to share my thoughts on the current state of the Boston Bruins. Let’s start in net, shall we? Bruins Goaltending Looking Strong The black and gold will head into the shortened 56-game season with the 2019-20 William M. Jennings Trophy winners in Tuukka Rask and Jaroslav Halak. The duo surrendered a league-low 174 goals in last year’s 70-game regular season. Every Bruins fan knows that Rask will become an unrestricted free agent at seas ..read more

Boston Bruins: Life After Zdeno Chara
Bruins Diehards
by Joe Russo
3y ago
Many consider July 1, 2006 as the turning point for the then-middling Boston Bruins, still bearing their post-Joe Thornton battle scars. To put things into perspective the Bruins weren’t just bad, they were awful. Finishing dead last in the North East Division the season prior, their goal differential was minus-36 and the worst of their worries was in their defensive core. All around, the Bruins lacked depth, skill and a definitive presence. Three days before the fourth of July Boston snagged free agents Marc Savard from the Atlanta Thrashers and Zdeno Chara from the Ottawa Senators. While the ..read more

After 14 years as the captain of the Boston Bruins, Zdeno Chara has inked a one-year, $795,000 contract with the Washington Capitals. The future Hall of Famer signed a five-year, $37.5 million contract with the Bruins on the first day of free agency in 2006 and maintained the captaincy from that day through the 2019–20 season. In his time as captain, he led Boston to a Stanley Cup victory and was a Norris Trophy finalist five times, winning it once. In his Bruins tenure, he amassed 481 points in 1,023 games and went to the All-Star Game five times. Chara is best known to hockey fans as the tal ..read more

Don Sweeney Knows What He’s Doing
Bruins Diehards
by Jess Belmosto

Another free agent slipped right through Don Sweeney’s fingers as Mike Hoffman signed a PTO with the St. Louis Blues. In typical fashion, the armchair GM’s were up in arms over the missed opportunity to sign yet another forward this offseason.  The addition of Ondje Kase and Craig Smith apparently doesn’t mean much to fans. Kase has been written off after 17 games. 11 of those games being after three months off and with no conditioning due to COVID-19 protocols and supposed missteps on his part.  The 25-year-old has yet to play a full NHL season but certainly has potential. It seems ..read more

Financially The Boston Bruins Remain An Envy Of The League
Bruins Diehards
by Joe Russo

For the second straight year, the Boston Bruins are estimated to be worth a billion dollars. The Bruins may have been No. 1 on the ice this past season but from a league-wide revenue perspective, they only managed to crack the top-five per Forbes’ annual assessment of team values. The following are the top-five rankings New York Rangers – $1.65 billion Toronto Maple Leafs – $1.5 billion Montreal Canadiens – $1.34 billion Chicago Blackhawks – $ 1.085 billion Boston Bruins – $1 billion However, it appears the only thing more top-heavy in the NHL than the Bruins offensive production was its lea ..read more
