OFF SEASON WHEN AND HOW TO PLAN
The Golf Fitness Coach

Offseason programs are prevalent in many sports today: Football, rugby, American football, cycling and now more and more so in golf as well. We have all seen what Bryson Dechambeau has achieved through his offseason with the addition of a lot of new muscle mass and some now argue that this has led to the game of golf changing. You could also look at Phil Mackeson’s body transformation (achieved in his late 40’s) and see that he used his off season to change his body; although in his case he lost a hell of a lot of weight because he realised that to play at his best for longer he had to be heal ..read more

IMPROVING YOUR GOLF SWING.  Improving your golf swing: Where to begin? It is a minefield. Take it from someone who has tried every trick in the book.  As a junior golfer I was lucky enough to benefit from golf Scotland funding, which was available at that time at “selected clubs”. Weekly lessons were provided.  This carried on until I was about 14 or 15.  Lesson were uncool, and I felt that i knew better: I mean I was winning medals and I was in the team! Pah Lessons! Who needs them? It is funny because for my other sport, football, I trained twice a week and kn ..read more

Nutrition For Golf
The Golf Fitness Coach

Nutrition can help golf performance if you let it.   It is well known that athlete nutrition is key to performance and in the majority of sports good practise trickles down from the elite to amateur level. Consider football as an example: I know many players at amateur level who will watch what they eat the night before and morning of (and during) a game. They think about wanting to feel good that day and wanting to have energy to play well. However golf is a sport where there’s still a fair bit of a mismatch between what amateurs vs. the elite do.  Why is this?   How many ..read more

How does golf fitness help you score better?   After a game of golf with a really good mate we were chatting and the topic came up about a disconnect between playing golf and training for golf fitness.  It got me thinking though that there might be a disconnect or a misunderstanding how the benefits of golf fitness carry over onto the golf course.     Mobility – Longevity and injury prevention are a huge, huge part of golf fitness.  We want to play the game we love for as long as possible. Even over the short term, we’d like not to have injury stop us p ..read more

How to get power like DeChambeau

There have been 2 rounds now since the PGA Tour started back up after an initial stop due to the covid-19 pandemic. There have been two different winners; Daniel Berger and Webb Simpson. Another huge talking point is DeChambeau’s swing: Actually, his swing speed to be precise. He has transformed from a very athletic looking golfer in 2017 with a club head speed of 119 MPH to   a far bulkier golfer in 2020 with a club head speed of 139MPH. There was no doubt at the beginning of 2020 that there had been some weight gain and that he had bulked up in his off season. However, the 3 m ..read more

Introduction to Golf Fitness
The Golf Fitness Coach
by Andrew Watson

Golf fitness is becoming more and more popular with the everyday golfer and of course it started with the pros. Actually, I should say “pro” (singular) as it was really one player in particular. We have all seen the pictures of Rory Mcillroy deadlifting and looking shredded, yet it wasn’t him. No. The shift towards golf fitness began with a young man who was about to change the whole face of golf: Tiger Woods.    That isn’t to say that golfers weren’t training for golf before him. They were, it just wasn’t spoken about.      It was the fact that Tiger was s ..read more
