Ground on the former Washington Elementary School site in Eastlake has recently been broken for Washington Place, which will be a 33-lot, single-family subdivision. The grand opening of Washington Place, which will be built by Ryan Homes, is expected to be sometime in the spring, said Mark Holz, president of Frontier Land Group, the project’s developer. Three at-large seats on Eastlake City Council will be decided in the Nov. 2 election and they have attracted five candidates — Todd Gulley, Chris A. Krajnyak, Angela Schmidt, Michael Semick and Logan Shreves. All five candidates are running for four-year terms beginning Jan. 1. Members of council receive $721.44 per month while the council president receives $821.44 per month. Gulley and Schmidt are seeking election, having been appointed to fill council vacancies. The Miracle League of Lake County will be hosting its Local Heroes All-Star Game this weekend at Lake Health Miracle Field in Eastlake. The league’s athletes, who all have some disability, will have the opportunity to play with local police, fire, military and medical personnel in games on the hour from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sept. 25, at 35200 Vine St. The National Anthem will be performed at 11 a.m., as well as the ceremonial first pitch. Heading into the future, we hope that Americans never grow weary of paying tribute to the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks when the anniversary of that tragedy arrives each year. It’s awesome to see how communities and individual organizations make efforts to ensure that those innocent and brave people in three American cities who died because of the horrific acts of terrorism on Sept. 11, 2001, are never forgotten. Merriment was aplenty at Eastlake’s first annual Oktoberfest, which celebrated German heritage with live music, dancing and, of course, an abundance of beer. The Oktoberfest was held at the Captain’s Stadium in Classic Park on Aug. 1 and featured music from the Cleveland-based Deutscher Musik Verein, or German Music Society in English, who entertained festival-goers with traditional German brass band music. A handful of engineering, utilities and water infrastructure projects have been approved by the Lake County commissioners in unanimous measure, including a resolution for a water main replacement at East Island Drive in Eastlake totaling $191,753.90. From the drumming circle to the showcasing of a variety of instruments and performers, Make Music Eastlake was a “great start” for a first-year event. That was the observation of Jeannie Fleming-Gifford, executive director of the Fairmount Center for the Arts and the organizer of the local event. Eastlake City Councilman Kimberly C. Evers is being remembered this week following his June 15 death. Evers was 64 and had been a resident of Lake County for more than 40 years. “I was proud to call Kim my friend,” said Eastlake Mayor Dennis Morley. “He was always there for our city as a councilman, EPAL director and member of the Boulevard of 500 Flags (Committee). “Whatever this city needed, Kim was there.” Evers was born March 6, 1956, in St., Paul, Minn.
