Authenticity

One of the buzz words among the chattering classes of the part of London in which I now live, is ‘authenticity’.  This, they believe, is a set of behaviours to which we should all subscribe.  It is hard to achieve, however, because no-one quite knows exactly what ‘authenticity’ is.  And if they claim to, their definitions vary widely.  Ever curious, I have done some research. Here is what Wikipedia – that fount of all knowledge – says: “Authenticity is a concept of personality in the fields of psychology, existential psychotherapy, existentialist philosophy ..read more

This week, we have two articles from academics.  The first compares Chinese Governance with that of some western countries.  The second looks at the latest announcement from the Chinese Communist Party and how these differ in important ways from earlier statements. Understanding China China will never have a person like Trump. Because in a democracy, if you get enough votes, you are the leader. But if a person without any work experience enters the Government, how can he govern the whole country? This is what China calls the politics of virtuous power. It is very impor ..read more

Empire

Was the British Empire a ‘good thing’?  Does it matter now, anyway? A few years before I was born, the British Empire occupied the largest land area in its history.  It covered roughly one-quarter of the world.  It was the largest Empire the world has so far known.  My Mother was born in Bangalore, India.  Her Father owned coffee plantations in Mysore.  I have lived most of my working life in one of the last British Colonies.  You might think that I cannot be objective about the British Empire.  But you would be wrong. Almost every month, it seems, a ne ..read more

Our first news story this week is about a book examining how ‘maleness’ is exhibited in China.  Since the 80s, many books have been published examining the social status of Chinese women, but the research on Chinese masculinity has been close to zero.  Professor Lei Jinqing was the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Hong Kong.  He retired in 2013.  During his tenure as Dean, he wrote a book – “Theory of Chinese Male Traits”.  He believes that they are different from the mainstream image of Western men.  More than ten years after the publication of Th ..read more

Social mobility

“Everyone is up” means common prosperity.  Common prosperity also means “everyone can go up”.  Some people moving up while others remain in the same position or go down, is uneven social mobility.  Many countries grapple with social mobility.  Here is what China is trying to do about it taken from an article in the Chinese media. by 丁亦然Why is social mobility important everywhere? Developing a market economy requires competition and survival of the fittest – even if you are a socialist.  However, looking at human rights and development, there should only be “winner ..read more

This week’s news has stories about China and about Hong Kong.  Alex Lo, of the South China Morning Post give a succinct and lucid analysis of the recent changes in China.  He comments how these have caused unease – while being understandable parts of China’s governance and future. Henry Kissinger recently complained that the United States didn’t have a coherent policy towards China. Implicitly, he meant that those in charge in Washington didn’t understand the country. Perhaps that’s true. But it is also true that many Chinese themselves are perplexed and confused by Beijing. Under Pr ..read more

What an imposing title!  And how dare I, not a scientist, anthropologist, or other expert, presume even to comment?  Scientists do the real work and come to their academic conclusions.  Each uses skills and knowledge gained over years of study.  I have the luxury of reading their research and linking it to others.  I can then imagine a scenario that might just be true.   Please read this post, therefore, as a creative extension of fact. Maxime Aubert/Indonesian Heritage Department Cave art from Sulawesi in Indonesia is now thought to be the oldest in the world. M ..read more

This week we publish as our single China News story, some fascinating glimpses into Chinese people’s reaction to the latest Marvel Movie.  Although not yet released in China, commentaries abound.  As usual there are many different views.  These show some interesting aspects of Chinese culture. “Shang-chi and Legend of the Ten Rings” has been the North American box office champion throne for three consecutive weeks. The picture shows the movie poster.  Is the evaluation of overseas Chinese and Taiwanese viewers very different?  Interestingly, I found that Chinese Ameri ..read more

If you read my blog, you will know my views about the media.  I consider the western media, especially, to be sloppy, inaccurate, biased, and trivial.  They focus on negative news and dramatize it to sell their publications.  Anything that does not fit their perceptions is left out or distorted.  There are a few, notably intelligent, writers whose views, even if one does not agree with them, are well researched and balanced.  But even they find their writing ‘censored’ by editors, headline writers and publishers. Imagine, then, my satisfaction in reading a piece in Far ..read more

In this week’s first story, we cover the disbanding of yet another Trade Union in Hong Kong deemed to be part of the left-wing ‘democratic’ movement. The Professional Teachers Union has decided to dissolve. The 31-year movement came to an end, mainly because it was not fighting for workers’ rights and interests, but because of its role in political activities. During the protests, the union responded with strikes, and was recently questioned for violating the Hong Kong National Security Law. The authorities stressed that the dissolution of the union under pressure did not mean that everything ..read more
