The Connection Between Decentralized Social Networks and Generative AI

In recent years, decentralized social networks have gained a lot of attention as an alternative to centralized platforms that collect and control user data. At the same time, generative AI has made significant strides in creating realistic and engaging content. These two trends may seem unrelated, but in fact, they are connected in some interesting ways. Decentralized social networks, as the name suggests, are social networks that are not controlled by a central entity. Instead, they are built on top of distributed systems that allow users to connect with each other directly. The advantage of ..read more

Imagine a world where robots, highly trained and specialized, exhibit their vast intelligence by creating unique works of art, all on their own. Perhaps in this world you would also encounter art exhibitions featuring hybrid AI creatures that interact with museum visitors. Or immersive artistic journeys that bring a viewer into an entire new world, guided by AI bots. Fantasy? Futuristic? Science Fiction? Not anymore. What was once squarely located in the realm of science fiction, has today become a widespread part of our daily reality.  From smart home tech gadgets that order your groce ..read more

As humans we feel duty bound to point out how much we know to others, especially if we think it’s incorrect. We do it often, sometimes in real life and frequently online. Reddit, twitter, Facebook, especially Quora, any forum on any topic and everywhere there is a comments section and a click worthy article we are there to opine till we turn (a web friendly shade of) blue in the face. This infamous meme sums it  up perfectly. We can’t help but share our knowledge – either in a helpful way or to respond eagerly at the gaps in someone else’s knowledge. Sometimes the latter leads to an a ..read more

Quantum Mechanic Behaviors in Humans – The Plot Thickens

An article was published recently entitled ‘Quantum mechanics could explain why DNA can spontaneously mutate’. If you aren’t that familiar with quantum mechanics, the key takeaway that makes this headline startling is that it claims there is a quantum impact on a living system. The current thinking (and what we only had evidence of so far) is that quantum mechanics is apparent only in inanimate objects. You may have come across quantum behaviors like entanglement where quantum particles can be strangely connected even when separated across a universe (spooky action at a distance cording to Ei ..read more

There are a number of developments in the field of Artificial Intelligence that signal it might be time for a directional change. Progress has been rapid in the last few years and AI is being implemented faster than we’ve had time to fully assess or prepare for. However the democratization of ML, limitations of deep learning and accountability questions in biased models and data, may be good reason to start looking for clues to build AI in a new way. The Commoditization of AI and Limits of Deep Learning AI, in the form of machine learning, mostly applying the ‘deep learning’ variety is being ..read more

Wisdom is the holy grail of intelligence. All the AI/ML in the world can bring you knowledge based on clever models and training, but human wisdom has no comparison yet.  Part of the challenge is that wisdom is made up of so many things. It can be pockets of knowledge, layers of first hand experience and gems of common sense all combined to produce an immeasurable human intelligence. We all have our personal wisdoms. It could be an age old family recipe or a decades honed career strategy or just a really useful book you read. Our wisdom exists like bubbles of specially crafted knowledge ..read more

In October 2021, we conducted user research to understand how people gain knowledge, specifically when they want to learn about something new. Why did we do it? Our Recommend feature is all about finding shortcuts to wisdom so we wanted to hear what people do it today. We asked 4 simple questions – where do you go first, what makes you trust sources of knowledge, what will you want to know more of over the next year and what holds you back learning something new? We found out some great insights like video as a popular method of learning but reading books are still at the top of the list despi ..read more

AI’s are Smart but it’s Humans that know where to look for Wisdom

We have enormous amounts of knowledge at our disposal so you’d think it would be easy to become an expert these days. If only this were true! Sadly we aren’t all super smart just because the internet exists. Despite the fact that vast quantities of easily accessible information is available online, it doesn’t turn you into an instant expert. You need to know where to look to find the good stuff i.e the salient information. To make it worse, the problem gets harder, as our internet grows.   We know that gaining expertise or wisdom is not simply down to the quantity of information we have ..read more

Capturing Shortcuts to Wisdom in a Human Way (Until AI gets better)

I’ve always been so grateful whenever I’ve received a helpful recommendation of what to read or watch. This led me to consider whether it was possible to build a service that could capture that sentiment and scale it. After all people’s lives can change on the strength of a good recommendation so why not try to encourage more of it? I couldn’t stop thinking about it and decided to test out an idea which saved single pieces of wisdom for anyone to retrieve. It was more than collecting bookmarks – it would include other types of knowledge in different mediums e.g. video clips, podcasts, books ..read more

A Formula for Wisdom

I’ve been searching for some kind of mathematical calculation that could be used as a value for wisdom. It’s a pretty tall order as wisdom itself is prone to a lot of subjectivity. What exactly constitutes wisdom and who can say how much it’s worth?  I came across a paper called You and Your Research by Richard Hamming (a mathematician and computer scientist) which made me think there could be a way to go about putting a value to wisdom or at least knowledge. You can read more about Hamming’s excellent paper in this recommendation. In it, he talks about knowledge being like compound int ..read more
