Closer than we’d have preferred, scarier than ideal at the end, but at the end of the day it is a W, and we’ll take that.
The Rangers scored no runs for eight innings on Saturday, then scored four runs in the ninth. Today, the Rangers scored four runs in the first, then didn’t score any more runs the rest of the way. I can appreciate the symmetry, but I’d appreciate more innings with runs scored more.
Not only did Texas score all four of their runs in the first inning, they registered four of their six hits in the first inn ..read more

It was Texas’ turn to score early and start dreaming about a no-hitter
The Texas Rangers scored four runs while the Cincinnati Reds scored three runs.
All throughout this homestand, the Rangers have been facing early deficits with runs scored in the first few frames, often the very first one. With a scuffling lineup, that felt ruinous to their chances of winning and often Texas would find itself in the middle innings staring up at a zero in the hit column.
Today, however, the Rangers were the team that jumped out in front and then kept the opposing lineup at quiet ..read more

That was quite a bleah game.
At least the Rangers didn’t get shut out. At least they didn’t get one hit. That meager rally in the ninth inning moved the hit total up and made the final score hit quite as bad as it could have been.
Davis Wendzel hit his first major league homer. Corey Seager hit a homer on his birthday to break a homerless streak. Those things are positive.
Michael Lorenzen pitched better than five runs allowed in six innings looks. In a game where the Rangers were ahead, or were even close, or weren’t looki ..read more

At least they weren’t shut out!
The Texas Rangers scored four runs but the Cincinnati Reds scored eight runs.
The Rangers had allowed first inning runs in every game of this homestand thus far until today but that meant today’s starter Michael Lorenzen only waited until the second inning for the Reds to take an early 2-0 lead to force the flailing bats to press even further.
And press they did. Were it not for a leadoff double in the fifth inning off the bat of Josh Smith, the Rangers would have been on no-hitter watch until an unexpected ninth inning rally.
