Did you know that suicide is the biggest cause of death in men under the age of 50 and, what’s more, men make up around three quarters of all deaths from suicide every year?   According to recent statistics more than 74% of suicides last year were men* (see end of article for full statistics).   These statistics still have the ability to shock despite being the case for a number of years.  This is why Second Step’s Hope Project was created in 2018 to work solely with men aged between 30 and 64 who are in psychological distress as a result of their finances, housing or employment ..read more

To coincide with LGBTQ+ History Month, our colleague Terry Starr has taken the time to reflect on this year’s theme of medicine, exploring historical discrimination in healthcare, and current efforts for equitable healthcare provision. The focus of the 2024 LGBTQ+ History Month is “Medicine – Under the Scope” and will look, in the words of the national organising committee, “at the amazing work of LGBTQ+ staff across the NHS and in other healthcare settings, in providing healthcare, especially during the pandemic.” At the same time, they note the need to “shine a light on the history of t ..read more

You may have seen that the UK Government is trying to pass new laws that would criminalise sleeping on the streets with a fine up to £2,500. We can’t let this inhumanity happen.  If passed, the Criminal Justice Bill would mean people who are homeless in England and Wales could face fines or even prison for so-called ‘nuisance’ rough sleeping.  Crisis has drafted an    Our Chief Executive, Aileen Edwards, fully supports Crisis’ stance:  “Here at Second Step, we understand that homelessness is often the result of adverse experiences. Recovery Coach Alex explains how role-playing in a fantasy game provided the safe space for a newfound reality and gave one of his clients, Kaine, a new lease of life.   When I first met Kaine over a year ago, he was closed, withdrawn and suffered from selective mutism, making communication very hard. To give you an idea – it could take up to four minutes for him to respond to a question.   But, with time and patience we slowly built a relationship, and then, choosing my moment with care, I suggested he try out a session of the table top role playing game (RPG) Dungeons an ..read more

To mark Parents Mental Health day on 27 January, we asked Second Step Bank Team worker Emma to write about a subject very close to her heart. Emma has experienced first-hand the damage of intergenerational trauma, suffering herself as a child. When her seven-year-old son started to experience severe anxiety after an emergency hospital admission, Emma decided to try to do something about it, and is now campaigning for change to prevent others from going through the same ordeal. In 2010, I began working in adult mental health services. That same year marked significant cuts to early childhood ..read more

Our Community Rehabilitation service in Bristol recently ran a creative writing group. Members met on Wednesday afternoons and wrote a mixture of stories, poetry and prose based on their personal experience and other themes that were suggested each week. Their work has been collated into a booklet, and a podcast has also been recorded, where pieces are read out by clients or others on their behalf, which is emotional and very powerful.  Recovery Navigator Lewis Ogle was instrumental in running this group. He said:  “Having a creative outlet is an importa ..read more
