Hi, I am Emily. This is my blog where I take big decorating ideas I see online and in magazines and break down the details so that they are less intimidating and more doable. This is also where I document the changes we are making to our colonial house. I've worked as an expert contributor for BHG.com, CNN.com, and the Conde Nast Traveler blog.

We renovated our upstairs several years ago and turned a laundry closet into a laundry room. (I’ll dig up more pictures of that and post later.) I’m pretty sure a load of laundry has been running ever since the renovation was finished and I just recently thought about the decorating part. It would be easy Read More

I teamed up with Sherwin-Williams once again to create a cozy fall color palette for their ad in the current issue of Magnolia Journal. The goal was to come up with an overall design that felt like somewhere you’d want to hang out on Saturday afternoons to watch football or read a book. I used Read More

The best thing about Etsy is that it’s an endless source of treasures. The worst thing about Etsy is that it’s an endless source of treasures. Unless you’re looking for something specific, you could end up window shopping (small businesses!) for hours. I’ve gone down that rabbit hole for you and here are some of the best finds for July.

Here’s proof that red, white and blue doesn’t have to solely be a summer color palette. I designed this entryway to feel classic year-round, bringing in a big gold statement mirror and letting the red play more subtly in a smaller-scale, striped wallpaper. The other key: varying shades of muted blues in the lampshade, artwork and rug. Natural wood tones (an antique chest, for example) and woven accents (baskets, trays, etc.) would also mix in well with this design.

Earlier this year, Sherwin-Williams reached out to me about working together to create an ad that conveys the personal power of color. (And, you know how I feel about color.) I decided to take our girls’ bathroom from white to bright with a fun chartreuse green called Gleeful. I wanted the look (but not the price) of wallpaper so I did, in fact, spend several days taping one-inch vertical stripes. (More on that here.) You can see the finished ad in the summer issue of Magnolia Journal, on newsstands now.

A list of the “good things” I’ve discovered lately:

This bra and their customer service. (They happily corrected an issue after I’d owned it for several months.)
Gold adhesive wall hooks. (Strong enough to hold our bathroom towels.)
These shampoo and conditioner bars.
This texturizing and volume spray.
I bought a pair of these chairs for our patio this year.
This linen blazer.
This patterned dress.
These sneakers for comfort. (I wore them all around NYC for three days last ..read more

One thing nobody tells you when you’re in throes of young motherhood is that your life actually gets busier when your kids get older–even when they’re drivers. How I once had five kids under the age of eight and managed to blog every day is now one of life’s great mysteries to me. (What was I trying to prove?) In the event a few of you are still reading blogs, this is me checking in to say hello.
What I’ve been up to lately:
Graduation prep. For the second year in a row, we have a high school graduate and for those of you who have been there, done that, you know that May is no joke. We ..read more

It’s always a subject that seems up for debate. Is it better to reupholster your furniture or buy new?
I shared this vintage chair and ottoman set that I found at a consignment store for $300 last year. Although the pattern wasn’t exactly what I would’ve chosen, they were bright and cheery and worked with my green kitchen walls. However, we really use our furniture and I quickly realized the fabric wasn’t upholstery weight (it started ripping in multiple spots) and definitely wasn’t meant for our family.
Around that time, Ewa from Modern Fabrics reached out to me about working together ..read more

I always think the new year trend predictions for interiors are kind of a hoot and never pay much attention to them. But, if these lists hold any weight, I was happy to see that COLOR seems to be on the uptick. According to House Beautiful, bold color–specifically chartreuse–is making a comeback. I know neutral rooms feel safe and noncommittal, but if you love color deep in your heart, life is too short to live in a gray house. Scared to paint a room? Sneak in a pillow, add some colorful taper candles or grab a quart of paint and change up a small piece of furniture. It’s an instant energizer ..read more
