"A star was born when Denver's Blood Incantation launched itself into prominence on its exciting 2016 debut Starspawn. The band possessed the talent, musicianship, and compositional prowess to match the growing hype. But when 2022's Timewave Zero came rolling through as a bold detour embracing their ambient soundscapes and minimalist synthwave experiments, offloading vocals, and suppressing their metallic instincts, I was left bewildered." Is going Absolute Elsewhere enough to help Blood Incantation regain their Metal Twitter Darlings™ status?

August of 2024 was a pretty good month. First, it marked my return from the Injured Reserve, where I'd been nursing a high ego sprain and nagging executive dysfunction issues. These aren't perfectly fixed, but being back on the field has shown beyond a doubt that I'm still a force to be reckoned with. Second, August of 2024 was a particularly fecund month for potential Records o' the Month. That surprised me.

"My second Soundcloud death metal promo in the matter of a week? Seems time is moving backward as I slowly devolve into a knuckle-dragging proto-man with outmoded tech. Turn of the Tide, the debut by French act Infern isn't the worst soundtrack for a Neanderthal revival as it's heavily inspired by none other than the mighty Bolt Thrower. Bands taking inspiration from the original War Masters are plentiful, but when that core sound is repurposed, good things can happen no matter how many times you've heard the formula before. Can Infern keep things on the safe side of the DMZ and avoid the land ..read more

"There are albums that choose you, and Corpsefucking Art chose me. Even for a band known for their comedy, Tomatized surprised me. There are certain subjects you cover for a brutal death/slam/goregrind band, with plenty of gore and torment populating its lyric sheets - even if the pig-squealed "EEEEEEEE" is the only thing you hear. Tomatized has all that and a Lovecraftian vibe: "Earth shall be ruled by a new breed of sentient beings!" the promo proudly proclaims. Okay, sentient beings dethroning humanity isn't too odd for death metal. "Behold the kingdom of cyclopic tomatoes ..read more

"Modern trends in "old school" death metal bug me. Beyond the neverending competition to see who can print the ugliest four-sided longsleeve in existence, the bulk of the scene appears annoyingly content with aping the bullet points of their inspirations. That's why Undeath, who have never come across as trying to sound like anyone other than Undeath, are one of my very favorites of the bunch." Death be snot proud.

"Sanctuarium is a young band with an old, rotted soul. The band's debut—recorded as a two-piece—was a more synth-drenched death/doom hybrid, heavy on atmosphere blending their doomy dirges in with mid-paced death. On its sophomore outing, Melted and Decomposed, the band has upped to a full five-piece and further evolved its sound. With this stylistic shift and three new members, it remains to be seen if Melted and Decomposedinnovates or not." Innovation in death metal? Unheard of! Absurd!

"Somewhere along the way, Adorior got angry. Their 1998 debut sounded like traditional black metal, albeit with occasional experimental touches like cleanly sung segments and moody atmospheric passages. I don't know what happened, but when the band returned with 2005's Author of Incest, they sounded ready to take up arms against the entire human race. Author of Incest is, simply put, one of the most incendiary albums ever recorded. Now, after years of dormancy, the group is finally back with their third album, Bleed on My Teeth. Does it continue the band's diabolical conquest of humanity?" Rag ..read more

"Defiled is a grizzled veteran of the death metal scene having released its first demo 31 years ago. As usual, there’s an extensive paper trail here at AMG that provides context for Defiled's oeuvre (as well as evidence for any future litigation). Over their storied career, they’ve been reviewed on this site three times by three different writers, and the results have been inconsistent. While their 2011 effort In Crisis received a glowing review from the AMG himself, followups struggled with issues from production quality to humdrum songwriting." But what do Felagund's Elf ears hear?

"Four albums deep into a promising and increasingly impressive career, California's death mongers Ripped to Shreds continue to hammer away and chisel a jagged path to the hearts of old-school death-loving folk. Following back-to-back bangers, the band's prolific mastermind and guitarist/vocalist Andrew Lee (also of Azath, Houkago Grind Time, Draghkar amongst a plethora of other projects) readies his battle-hardened companions for another sick, ugly dose of grind-injected old school death mayhem." You're in for a surprise....

It was difficult to press play when I first loaded up 2024's tenth The Black Dahlia Murder LP, Servitude. It felt strange to know that our affable, bearded, and dad-bodded metal nerd was no longer going to be screaming at me about lycanthropy. I wondered whether I could enjoy a Strnadless TBDM record or if it would change their sound irrevocably.
