Killswitch Engage – This Consequence Review
Angry Metal Guy » Metalcore
by Saunders

"Back in the ye olden days of the post-millennium era, while becoming increasingly enamored with extreme metal, nor was I immune to the nü trends and buzz bands of the period. During my musical travels, I stumbled across the underrated self-titled debut from then little-known Massachusetts metalcore band Killswitch Engage. The rugged, bouncy brand of melodic metalcore had an irresistible appeal, with the Gothenburg-indebted riffs, chunky breakdowns, and charismatic scream/clean combo of vocalist Jesse Leach." Jinjer – Duél Review
Angry Metal Guy » Metalcore
by Dolphin Whisperer

"Despite the coverage in these halls referencing 2016's King of Everything as "...so inessential, so boring, and so forgettable...," Jinjer has persisted through almost ten years, from then, of rising notoriety. With hundreds of thousands of listeners on streaming services, and a touring schedule loaded with international dates and festival appearances, it's safe to say that the Ukrainian nu-prog-groove outfit has earned some sort of place at the metal table." Welcome to the kid's table. The post Jinjer – Duél Review appeared first on Angry Metal Guy ..read more

"To the Grave are not fucking around anymore; not that they ever really were. Lyrically, musically, and visually, Everyone's A Murderer is the Sydney outfit's most brutal, no-holds-barred audial assault to date." Murder every day. Knocked Loose – You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To [Things You Might Have Missed 2024]

"Is the hype surrounding Knocked Loose legit? Making (perhaps unwanted) waves with that "arf arf arf" breakdown in "Counting Worms" and waking babies, and "being woke," with an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! with collaborator Poppy, the Kentucky group is getting its fair share of backlash and praise in equal measure. It's easy to approach You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To in this light, but the novelty is merely a facet of the album." Spider God – Possess the Devil Review

"Black metal goes with just about anything, so they say. Shoegaze? Check (Deafheaven). Rock ‘n’ roll? Check (Kvelertak). Hell, even dream-pop has been incorporated (An Autumn for Crippled Children). Black metal covers of famous songs are now fairly standard (Fleshgod Apocalypse’s cover of Eiffel 65’s “Blue” and Children of Bodom’s cover of “Oops!… I Did it Again” stand as fairly notorious examples). But when Spider God released their infamous set of covers, Black Renditions, in 2022, the combination of overt pop sensibilities with legit black metal bona fides made metalheads take notice, if on ..read more

Ad Infinitum – Abyss Review
Angry Metal Guy » Metalcore
by Dear Hollow

Women vocalists in metal are often labeled "Gothic" or categorized under power metal, even when the music lacks these traits. With its fourth full-length, Abyss, Ad Infinitum defies these labels. Moving away from their earlier symphonic and Gothic influences, the Swiss/German band now blends elements of Deadlock, Spiritbox, and Amaranthe. Their sound combines downtuned riffs with poppy female vocals and vicious growls, fitting the "modern metal" label. With Melissa Bonny leading, it’s hard not to bob your head along. Cyborg Octopus – Bottom Feeder Review

"San Francisco's Cyborg Octopus found a happy home with this sponge way back in 2018. Debut full-length Learning to Breathe floored me with a fearless application of kitchen-sink, genre-bending exuberance, all filtered through a tech-death/metalcore lens. It's difficult to craft music like this in a way that doesn't feel disjointed, but Cyborg Octopus skillfully arranged their kaleidoscopic writing to form a cohesive sound and thereby ensured my rapt attention."
