Hello, readers. This is Jeremy speaking from the here and now, as opposed to back in the 1920’s where our story left off. Unfortunately, we need to address an issue that has come up. As recently as yesterday, August 3rd, 2020, a website called hockeybull.com has been posting articles from here at First Line Rover under a different author’s name without any permission of any kind from me. The only thing I was given was a small “Source Link” at the bottom of the page that’s completely hidden in plain sight. Not only that, there is no form of contact I can use to reach out to these people on thei ..read more

Headline – Punch Broadbent’s scoring streak On December 24th, 1921, the Canadiens were in Ottawa to face the Senators. The game was an outright blowout, with the Sens ultimately taking the game by a score of 10-0. Ottawa’s sixth goal was scored by Punch Broadbent seven minutes into the third period. It’s significant, because he’s scored in every single game since. This was Ottawa’s third game of the season. They’ve played 13 to date, and Punch has scored in all but the second game. That’s 11 straight, for those counting at home. There’s a word for that. That’s…uh…*checks notes*…ah here we are ..read more

December 1921 – The same teams are back, for a change

Headline – Split season format removed Over the summer, the NHL decided to remove the split season format from use, and use a simpler system where the top two teams at season’s end compete in a playoff series to determine the NHL representative in the Stanley Cup Final. This seems like it could be a reaction to Ottawa’s 1919-20 success, where they eliminated the need for a playoff series by winning both halves of the season. They were well on their way to repeating that trick in 1920-21, but a massive seven game losing streak put a pin in all that. Not that that stopped them from shutting out ..read more

March 1921 – The Playoffs

Headline – The long path to the Cup By month’s end (or the first week of April), we will have a Stanley Cup Champion. However, there’s a lot to determine before we get there. Entering March, we only knew one thing about the results of the NHL: The Senators were going to play against someone in a two game total goal series for the right to compete for the Stanley Cup. The Canadiens and St. Pats entered the final day of the regular season with identical 9-4-0 records in the league’s second half, with the lone date on the schedule remaining being a matchup against each other at Arena Gardens in T ..read more

February 1921 – New Contenders Arise

Headline – There may yet be playoffs The big story of February 1921 is the Senators’ big losing skid. The Sens entered play on February 12 with a sterling record of 12-3-0, scoring 72 goals combined and conceding just 39. They had clinched the first half of the season, and were on their way to another half win to repeat their domination of 1919-20. But then something strange happened. Their vaunted offense just kinda stopped scoring, and their stout defense began to show cracks. . Here’s a list of their final six games of the month: Loss to Montreal, 1-3 Loss to Toronto, 3-4 Loss to Montreal ..read more

January 1921 – The Senators still reign supreme

Headline – Senators are still really really good To no one’s surprise, the Senators ran away with the first half title. They were able to mostly keep the roster together from last year’s domination, other than Punch Broadbent and Sprague Cleghorn, who were moved to Hamilton by the league for competitive balance reasons (they never reported; Broadbent simply never reported and returned to Ottawa, Cleghorn ended up getting moved to Toronto, and only recently reported there). Considering they haven’t played for Montreal either, they’ll probably end up back with Ottawa by season’s end. It’s hard t ..read more

December 1920 – Welcome, Hamilton

Headline – The NHL comes to Hamilton So, after a couple of years of wondering whether Quebec would be a part of the league, they finally joined in. Just as quickly as they came, they left. With all the losing they did, despite having the leading goal scorer in the league, not nearly enough fans showed up to their games, and the NHL took the team away from Quebec. The Athletics were sold to the Abso Pure Ice Company, located in Hamilton, Ontario, and renamed the Hamilton Tigers. Hamilton was chosen for one very special reason: Eddie Livingstone. Yup, he’s still making trouble. Now that his stak ..read more

Headline – Is there a future for Quebec? When we last left the Quebec Athletics, they were 3-17-0 on the season, drawing flies, and serving as the league’s doormat. Their last four games in March could have some meaning, though. They have the league’s best scorer, Joe Malone. They could string a couple of wins together, maybe show their fans that they’re committed to building a contender in the coming months. It starts with their first game, a March 3rd tilt at home with the Canadiens. Let’s see how that went: Ah. Yeah, there’s no hope for them. So what can be done to save this team? It’d be ..read more

February 1920 – They are who we thought they were

Headline – Playoffs deemed unnecessary Remember last month how we said the Senators were that good? Yeah, they are. We haven’t seen a single team this dominant since the 1912-13 Quebec Bulldogs, who went 16-4-0 in their season before steamrolling the Sydney Millionaires in the final. These Senators are something different. Their defense and goaltending is on a completely different level. If you can actually get through the defense of Eddie Gerard, Sprague Cleghorn, or Georges Boucher, you’ll still have Clint Benedict to beat in order to score. Combine that with their forward group actually sco ..read more

Headline – The Senators are really good In the first two seasons, we’ve had some decent competition for the top spot in the league. The Canadiens were largely the best team in Season One, but were taken down by Toronto in the NHL Final. The Senators played that role in Season Two before being dismissed by Montreal in the Final. This season, one team looks significantly better than all the others. That team is Ottawa. Their roster is by far the best constructed in the league. Frank Nighbor, Jack Darragh, Punch Broadbent, and Cy Denneny are scoring up front. Holding up the back end is Eddie Gera ..read more
