By design bitcoin’s computations increase in difficulty as more computers come online. In this way, Foley says bitcoin mining is “like sticking a straw into the earth and sucking real hard”. As the money has flowed, the enterprises engaged in mining are growing larger and moving into energy-rich but regulation-light environments like China, Russia and Iran in a race to confirm more calculations and “mine” more bitcoin. In April 2020, about 65 per cent of all bitcoin mining in the world happened in China, according to figures from the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance, with a third of ..read more

You may not remember, but a modified copy of Xcode that surfaced on the web in 2015 was responsible for injecting malware into several iPhone and iPad apps that were subsequently uploaded to the App Store. Now, thanks to the Epic vs. Apple trial, internal Apple emails have revealed that more than 128 million iOS users were affected by the “XcodeGhost” malware. As noted by a Motherboard report, Dale Bagwell confirmed in an email that 128 million consumers had downloaded more than 2,500 apps infected by the malware that came from the fake copy of Xcode. In total, these 2,500 infected apps have ..read more

Apple is now sending a new survey to Apple Watch users, this time to learn more about how its consumers use it to monitor health data. Interestingly enough, the company asks if the user has any apps installed to monitor eating habits, medications, and blood glucose levels. A screenshot of the survey was shared with 9to5Mac by a Brazilian reader, who received it in his email on Friday. In the email, Apple says it wants feedback on the Apple Watch user experience, with a link to submit the answers. Update 05/07/20: The iPad Pro now has 5G support, along with the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. The marketing machine for 5G is now in high gear. AT&T arguably fired the first shot when it started re-labeling some of its 4G LTE service “5G Evolution,” complete with a “5G e” logo in the status bar of some phones. Now, 5G is everywhere you look. All the major carriers are spending big money hyping up “5G” and trying to convince you that, first of all, you need it, and what’s more, you need it from that carrier. It’s all needlessly confusing, too. The carriers are trying to bamboozle you ..read more

Tile has just gained support for Sidewalk—Amazon’s “neighborhood network” wireless standard. This new integration means Tile’s trackers now have a much larger network to work with, which makes it a more viable competitor for Apple’s similar AirTag trackers. Sidewalk is Amazon’s new wireless standard, which Amazon hopes more smart home and IoT devices will use. The standard relies on the low bandwidth 900MHz spectrum, and has a longer reach than Bluetooth and can better pass through walls than Wi-Fi. Sidewalk also uses relatively little power as well. Amazon wants this network to be able to ..read more

Concept: Taking tvOS even further with Handoff, Apple News, a content-focused Home Screen, and more

tvOS is missing a lot of tent pole features of the Apple ecosystem. It’s an excellent foundation, but it could use a lot of work. It often feels like tvOS gets left behind when Apple is working on its annual platform updates. It’s time for it to get a chance to shine. The first part of tvOS that you see is the Home Screen. Apple’s kept it fairly simple for a few years now. It has a large header space for dynamic content and a sea of app icons below it. In fact, it’s been that way since 2012 before Apple officially branded Apple TV’s software as “tvOS.” There are a couple of ways Apple could ..read more
