There is No Hope for The Environmental Movement Until Black Lives Matter
Earth Fix Club

Since the protests for Black Lives Matter began about two weeks ago, I’ve been trying to figure out how to continue writing about climate action without feeling like I’m ignoring the importance of this moment. I knew there was a connection between the two issues, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. After reading a perspective piece by Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson in the Washington Post last week, the dots in my head were finally connected. If you aren’t a subscriber, reading Dr. Johnson’s article titled, “I’m a black climate expert. Racism derails our efforts to save the planet” is worth much m ..read more

Green Transportation After the Pandemic: Will Environmental Relief from COVID-19 be Temporary or Long-Lasting?
Earth Fix Club

The leading story of the novel coronavirus is a tragic and gripping tale about the disruption of life as we know it. Most of the world has been affected, billions of people have been ordered to stay home, and as a result the global economy is suffering. While so many people have been impacted personally, financially, and socially, another important story is making headlines: the impact that COVID-19 is having on the environment—or rather the temporary lull of environmental impacts. When the stories of crystal clear water in the canals of Venice and smog-free air in China’s megacities came out ..read more

11 Reasons to Be Optimistic About the Environmental Movement in 2020
Earth Fix Club
by Daniel Howson

Every day there are headlines about climate change and environmental issues giving us good reason to feel overwhelmed and demoralized about the damage being done to our planet. Whether it’s because of our negativity bias or the media constantly serving us bad news, we tend to overlook the progress that is being made all over the world. Bad things happen quickly, but all good things take time, as Dr. Gordon Livingston might say. This certainly seems true for the environmental damage caused by humans as of late, however, it has taken a couple hundred of years guzzling fossils fuels to reach this ..read more

Spotlight: The Renewable Energy Career Academy
Earth Fix Club
by Daniel Howson

When I started the EarthFix Club, I had big dreams about creating a community of people who are interested in a clean and sustainable future. In the past few years, my piecemeal attempt at this has been distracted by other jobs, projects, and endeavors. The most important of these distractions is the Renewable Energy Career Academy that I started in order to provide training to aspiring solar energy professionals and, perhaps one day, to all disciplines of renewable energy and sustainability. You can read about our vision to get better understanding of what we do, and if you or anybody you kno ..read more

What If: Preamble of a Manifesto
Earth Fix Club

What if our planet is in fact the only one with water in the entire universe? Would we take care of it, keep it clean and healthy, and cherish it more? Would it be easier to convince ourselves that some things are more important and worth protecting? Would we consider delaying continuous and limitless global economic growth to stabilize our climate and the environmental impacts of our civilization? Would we clean up our oceans and protect sea life? Would we slow our use of groundwater aquifers and protect freshwater resources? What if our plant is in fact the only one with forms of life in the ..read more

Changing the Game: Will Superstorms Change the Way We Build?
Earth Fix Club

In the last month, two major hurricanes hit the United States causing unprecedented damage in Houston, Texas and forcing millions to evacuate Florida ahead of the most powerful storm ever recorded in the Atlantic. In the wake of these storms, many people are discussing the impacts that rising global temperatures and warming ocean waters have on the climate, contributing to unpredictable weather and powerful storms like Harvey and Irma. These two storms alone have killed dozens of people, damaged homes and buildings, disrupted supply chains and economic activity, and are expected to cost hundr ..read more

The Role of Social Media: How Does Environmental Stewardship Take Off?
Earth Fix Club

There is no denying the impact that social media networks have had in connecting people all over the world. Facebook’s recently announced 5-word mission to “Bring the World Closer Together” makes clear their intention to do just that. The internet has given billions of people access to education, information, and most importantly each other — Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have a combined user base of 2.78 billion people worldwide, while messenger applications WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger have 2 billion users as of January 2017. With over 1.8 billion people on Facebook alone, it’s easy to ..read more

The Positive Media Movement

The idea of positive journalism is a relatively new concept but a growing theme in the world of news and media. At a climate change conference like COP21 that took place in Paris in December 2015, this theme is right at home alongside the activist culture. Too often the media is perceived as eye-catching entertainment that appeals to the shock value of breaking news and hard-hitting stories. We assume their programming is designed to gain viewers and turn heads, rather than provide in information and education for its audience. The journalists, writers, and creative individuals that gathered f ..read more

The Solution

The health of our environment is not simply a recent issue. In fact, concerns with environmental pollution are documented in the writings of early human civilizations. As the abilities of scientific research improved over time, discoveries in the 19th century created theories of environmental health that are still valid today. However, despite the long-understood importance of our environment, only in the past few decades have we begun to see mainstream acceptance of the idea that human civilization is contributing to climate change, and could be unsustainable given the finiteness of ..read more
