Movie Openings
Script Aid

I love, love movie openings. Not only do viewers decide within the first couple of minutes whether they want to keep on watching, but an opening advertises what is about to come.  The best movies have a long teaser opening, which feels like a short film before the actual movie starts. As a scriptwriter it is so important to have an amazing movie opening as you want to hook script readers into your story from the get-go. Horror movies are known to open a movie in a spectacular way to forebode of what thrills are to come. They are a lot of fun to watch, are mostly crafted well and ..read more

Movie Kisses

I was watching the movie “Drive” and was blown away by the kissing scene in which Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan and a killer hired to kill Mulligan are all in an elevator. There is tension between Gosling and Mulligan, but also between Gosling and the killer.  Ryan Gosling gives Carey Mulligan this sweet and innocent kiss and right after smashes the killer’s head in so brutally, that Mulligan leaves the elevator in utter shock, which of course was the end of their romance before it even started. There are good movie kisses and there are bad movie kisses. As a writer you have the chance to ..read more

Movie Soundtracks

When watching the movie Sinister, the movie soundtrack blew me away. Especially the accompanying music of the murder scenes was very, very intense. I don’t know if those scenes would have been as creepy without this music, composed by Christopher Young. It’s a very different kind of soundtrack, as Christopher Young uses synthesizers in a fresh kind of way with eerie sounds and tunes. Each track is very different to the previous. It captures each killing scene perfectly and gives them their own tone.  Differing the tracks is also an unusual method, as a normal soundtrack score has a m ..read more

Movie Lines ✍️
Script Aid

While again watching the movie Galaxy Quest; a satire on Star Trek, I noticed how neatly they made use of two main movie lines: “By Grabthar’s hammer, we live to tell the tale.” (there are more hilarious variations from this character within the whole movie) “Never give up. Never surrender.” Watch the opening of Galaxy Quest to get an idea. Both of the quotes get used by two main characters, which’ve lost their enthusiasm for those quotes near the beginning of the movie. However as the film moves forward and their story unfolds, they regain their appreciation for the line and use it enthu ..read more

Movie Props

A movie prop stands for movie property and can be any item which is characteristic, used within the context and storyline of a movie, or as a supporting apparatus for the characters. One overlooked aspect of a movie and its props are extras, yes extras. The industry may not come right out and say but yes, within the industry, extras for the most part are considered as “props”. While props normally get developed after a screenplay is written, a screenplay can act as the basic inspiration for a prop. Think about the infamous white mask the killer in Scream wears. Movie Power

The following is a very important article, the reason for which is it not only gives you insight into what power a movie has as an art form, but also what power a screenplay writer can bring to the screen. I researched this topic, thought about for awhile and came up with some reasons as to why movies are so powerful: Firstly what springs to mind is that movies and/or TV shows are an entertaining escape. We can use movies to unwind after a long day, use it as a distraction from our daily routine or to make us feel better. Movies are such a strong community tool. You share movies with others. Movie Homes

Movie Homes can do so much more than just showing us how film characters live. They can be used to scare us, act as a romantic getaway, catapult us into a different moment of history or sometimes even are the stars in a movie. I truly believe that some films would only be half as a good if it weren’t for some of the character homes you find in films. Therefore houses are just as important as the characters that live in them. After all, a house is a reflection of its inhabitant’s personalities. They can also be used to support a movie’s plot.  The above house in When a Stranger Calls  ..read more

If you ever need a special screenplay related gift for that burgeoning writer you’re acquainted with, below are a couple of original gift ideas to choose from. Writing: General There are endless ideas here.  You could gift a screenplay writing software, index cards, a writing board, nice pens and notebooks. These will help nicely in inspiring and motivating that person to get that screenplay/story written. Printer Ink and Paper It may sound like a boring gift, but a printer with printer ink and paper is always an excellent gift idea, as screenplay writers tend to print a lot. And if you ..read more

Movie First Aid

Last weekend I retook my first aid course. While driving home I got to thinking about how movies depict scenes involving first aid. Too many movies get First Aid scenes wrong, to put it bluntly, they are just so incorrect, at times even laughable. Some examples of which I thought about were and scenes involving CPR, performing tracheotomies and removing objects from someone’s body when they shouldn’t be.  One of the worst movie examples of doing First Aid the wrong way is The Abyss. Watch the CPR scene here. And then read Worst Aid: 6 Examples of Bad Hollywood Medicine created by H ..read more

Movie Deaths ☠️

The way people die in a lot of movies, or TV series is often clichéd; they look pretty good, stay alive long enough to say something significant or stupid, which no dying person would likely say. All in all they act how normally dying people wouldn’t act.  I know this because I worked as a nurse and watched a lot of people die, and for the most part it just isn’t pretty. Viewers are scared of death so it gets sterilized for human consumption; it gets portrayed in a way to make it more palatable. I personally think death does have a huge impact on a movie if you create a great and meaningf ..read more
