Purveyor of the soundtrack to The Sushi Prophecies, Burton is here to serve. Get a mug of mushroom tea and pick a song. God Bless this Record Shop. Get the Spotify Playlist Follow Plump Press on Spotify When I say shitty record shop, I mean it in only the best possible way. Like a great dive bar, it doesn’t advertise, and it doesn’t care. Burton’s Vinyl doesn’t sell tickets to known bands, it never stopped pushing records, it doesn’t make money, and Burton, the guy who preaches at the register, doesn’t give a shit. Burton has lived, he has loved, and he has rocked. My friend has so m ..read more

The jig is up, they’re on to us. We were on borrowed time and had to get the heck out of dodge. They only give us scoundrels so much time in Australia before we have to re-up the old visa. This meant a couple weeks in New Zealand, which as we soon learned, was a terrible idea. Terrible, because you learn that your plans were backwards, or sideways, or upside down in general. New Zealand deserves months, or years, or lifetimes. Upon realization you slap your forehead, to which the locals sympathize and simply tell you, “told you so”. There’s a chip on their shoulder called Australia. Not to wor ..read more

Somewhere along the Sunshine Coast. An Airbnb thrown together haphazardly, with its thin walls and IKEA ware. It didn’t matter, the beach was a barefoot away, the sun was hot, and there were minimal blue jellies lying in wait of the space between naked toes. A Dog Called Quest was being less vampiric these lazy days. He feared the sun, unlike all other cattle dogs united across the nation. Just a pup though, we’d say, until he attacked our ankles in protest of any sand hikes or wave-dipping. How could he be our child, we’d say, as we constantly chased that sun and rolled around those beaches ..read more

Get Out of My Dreams and into My Car

“I really wanted that Yarris,” I muttered, stomping on the pedal of the gutless Hyundai El-who-gives-a-fuck-tra. “She’s a good car,” she said, flicking through the Top 40 stations as we blasted through St. Kilda up into wine and farm country in the mountains. “Yeah, but we’re in going to the Yarra Valley…get it?” Radio flicking and silence. The little Red Roo Racer was a good rental, one of two Hyundai’s that would get us through while we searched out the perfect ute. She was a beauty of a go-cart, however. And as we escaped Melbourne due southwest, five hundred kilometers down the Great Ocean ..read more

Music To Write To

Have you ever slipped into flow without knowing it, only to snap out of it hours later with many, many words on page, and a song you’ve heard before knocking around in your brain? You look around and your desk, or table, or carpet, or bed…wherever you write is covered in that warmth of creativity. Was it the music in the background – your playlist of favourite tracks, or some newly discovered well of goodness – that put you in that gooey-rich place? Did the muse come from the music? I tend to think so. I’ve been known to put an artist, or album, or a single track on repeat if I think it rep ..read more

Melbourne was never supposed to be. Planted atop unworkable land, it was surveyed, poked and prodded hundreds of years ago until a gent called Batman (yup) unlawfully ‘purchased’ the lot of it from the aboriginals for a few household items and a yearly top-up of dysentery-inducing blankets and the like. Posh and dirty, illicit and straight-laced, the new Melbourne is an immigrant dance-party. A shipping container becomes a hipster mecca with many beertaps and salty crunchy things to ease your behavior. A tram is a free ride around town where sweaty people stare at one another. A market is a pl ..read more
