the earth trembles.

Below the still surface of the millpond
under a shroud of mist,
a withering crone in a mold-stained
blindfold
digs a watery garden
marked with headstones.

Beware the impostor—
that walking wraith, that
shadow with a familiar face
made
of stolen parts sewn on.
She took my nails, my teeth,
my hair piece by piece
and replaced them with her own.

beyond recall—
A fleeting thought, repeating… I’m…

The humble toad, mulling in the earth,
grows a bright gem in its head like a thought.

kill
the toad, the stone’s
magic
dies as well.
