JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) - In April, Science Hill High School (SHHS) students participated in a reading challenge to see how many minutes they could accumulate that month. Now, in May, pages are still turning.
In April, students concluded the month with 130,666 minutes of reading, surpassing the 20,000 minutes goal Anne Timbs, SHHS library media specialist, set.

ERWIN, Tenn. (WJHL) — Downtown Erwin hosted the first Trails and Tunes Festival on Saturday.
The Trails and Tunes Festival is a rebranding of the former Great Outdoors Festival. The new festival welcomed more music, vendors and outdoor adventure than before.
The festival celebrated the region's best bands, crafters and nature spots. Guests enjoyed various outdoor activities such as mountain biking, rock climbing, fly fishing and more. There was also a designated area for children.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) - East Tennessee State University's (ETSU) graduating class of 2024 took to the stage Saturday alongside alumni from the class of 1974.
"It's good to be back and see the excitement on the faces of all the new graduates," said Ron Edmond, ETSU class of 1974.
Returning alumni were inducted into the Golden 50s club during the commencement ceremony.
"I think it's a great tradition to be able to honor and to be able to escort the new graduates into the real world, as it were," said Edmond.

BRISTOL, Va. (WJHL) — A kitten in a dangerous situation was saved by Bristol, Virginia first responders on Friday before finding its forever home.
A social media post by the Bristol, Virginia Police Department (BVPD) said citizens located a kitten stuck in the undercarriage of a vehicle in the parking lot of the Pal's on Lee Highway. Those individuals were able to free the kitten, but afterward, it ran away to a creekbed and hid under large rocks, according to the post.
