Senses are the way our brains interpret our environment. Many of us learned in school that humans have five senses — sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. We were also taught that many animals have more or less the same senses but within a different range. For example, while humans can see red, green, and blue light, many species of birds can see all of these colors as well as UV light; however, dogs can only see yellow and blue light. Meanwhile, humans can only hear frequencies up to about 23,000 Hz, while dogs can hear sounds up to 45,000 Hz. However, these aren’t the only five senses. Alt ..read more

How Do We Remember Things?

Aesthetic Representation of a Neuron1 The brain is capable of storing the computer equivalent of a petabyte, or 100 million gigabytes.1 That’s the equivalent of 4.7 billion books. It has 86 billion neurons, 400 miles of capillaries, 100 thousand miles of nerve fibers, and more than 10 trillion synapses.1 And yet, despite this, our memory feels as fragile as a butterfly in a hurricane. How exactly is it that we are theoretically capable of so much yet feel as though we can only remember so little? In this article, you’re going to learn about the current understanding of what memory is, how it’s ..read more

Every time we search something like ‘Why isn’t 11 pronounced onety-one’ or ‘Why isn’t there an E grade’ on Google, the algorithm behind the search engine runs through its corpus of data to find the answers which are most suitable for the question to give the user. This blog will explore the Google Pagerank system, in a simplified form with keywords and equations to explain how the algorithm functions.  Pagerank is an original algorithm used only by Google created in 1998. Due to the vast amount of data it holds, the search engine faces space-time complexity. The space complexity is the P ..read more

The mushroom cloud of the first hydrogen bomb1 We’ve seen the clips. A clear blue sky suddenly filled with a mushroom cloud of smoke and the resounding boom of the explosion. But if you’ve noticed, most of these clips are very old, often dating back many decades. Modern nuclear weapons have achieved staggering heights of destructive power. A single malfunction in the central technology controlling nuclear missile launch could launch a US nuclear attack at Shanghai, killing upwards of 30 million people – millions more than the 20 million total deaths (military and civilian) in World War 1.2 But ..read more

Wild bees are more affected by climate change than by disturbances to their habitats, according to a team of researchers led by Penn State. The research data suggest that addressing land-use issues alone will not be sufficient to protect these important pollinators. “Our study found that the most critical factor influencing wild bee abundance and species diversity was the weather, particularly temperature and precipitation,” said Christina Grozinger, Distinguished Professor of Entomology and director of the Center for Pollinator Research, Penn State. “In the Northeastern United States, past t ..read more

Causes Of Climate Change

Most Important Cause Of Climate Change Human action is the main cause of climate change. Individuals burn fossil fuels and convert land from forests to agriculture. Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, people have burned more and more fossil fuels and changed tremendous regions of land from forests to farmland. Burning fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. It is called a greenhouse gas since it produces a “greenhouse effect”. As a result, the greenhouse effect makes the soil warmer, just as a greenhouse is warmer than its environment. Furthermore, carbon dioxide ..read more

Riya Patel: What COVID-19 Has Taught Me

As an aspiring healthcare professional, I wanted to speak out about the relationship between mental health and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic (which has now hit the one-year mark), and my own experiences with it. For ages now, the terms “quarantine” and “social distancing” have been around. To many, these concepts have been familiar, and a daily occurrence. Take, for example, cancer patients, or any patient with a weak immune system. They have been socially distanced every day of their life as a patient, to make sure that they do not contract diseases or even catch something as simple as the co ..read more
