My 2024 resolutions

In just a few days the gyms will be overrun with people, Stanleys will be fished out from the back of the cupboard, and trash cans will be stuffed with the leftover sugary treats from the holiday season. Resolution season is upon us. Coming up with my first draft of resolutions was incredibly easy. Why? Because all I had to do was copy-paste from last year, and the year before, and likely the year before that. Looking back at my resolutions for 2020 could be a carbon copy of what I want to focus on this year. And that word — focus — is the word echoing in my head as I begin to board the Reso ..read more

One of my favorite skills that I acquired in therapy was mindfulness. With it, I was able to help reduce my anxiety, help improve my depression (especially here in gloomy Seattle), and learn how to practice gratitude. I use the skill to practice stillness, set intentions, and reflect on all facets of life. But, once I started leaning into the digital apps for help in this area, I began to lose focus and interest. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Headspace, and it is incredibly effective, but the journaling apps I tried started to feel more like a check-the-box task and less about my practi ..read more

Call me Rebecca Bloomwood and get me a green scarf, because this is my confession: I am a shopaholic. Like our friend Becky in the 2009 movie, I too feel that the world gets better when I shop. I’m sure I can guess where the habit was born, but I have always been a shopper. There’s an intense rush that floods over me when the sales associate walks the bag around the counter and places the handles onto my open palm. It’s impulsive a lot of the time. It’s like I haven’t given it much thought, and yet at the same time, it’s all I can think about in the moment. Maybe it’s an ADHD thing, but I bec ..read more

Have you ever been on the verge of a full-blown panic attack? The kind where the weight of the world seems to be crushing your existence until you’re the size of an ant. You can feel your heartbeat in your ears, the adrenaline coursing through your veins, and all of the words you shouldn’t say ready to fly off the tip of your tongue to cut like daggers. Maybe these feelings bubble up when work becomes a little too much — when one person leaves and their work becomes your work because you’re just that good. Maybe it’s when you’re stuck in a house with your entire family for the holidays — inc ..read more

Life update: What’s happened in 3 years

Life is funny, isn’t it? Nearly three years ago, I published an episode of the Self Care Podcast with a friend and ex-colleague, Georgia, about corporate burnout. Little did I know, that would foreshadow the future I was rapidly approaching. Not only did my then-current role take ALL my free time, my mental health, and my self-confidence, but it also took this very blog (and the podcast). Let me pause to acknowledge my ownership and responsibility in all of this. I absolutely could have handled things differently then. I didn’t maintain effective boundaries, nor did I prioritize the most eff ..read more

When ‘Happy’ is Too Much to Ask For

Have you ever had one of those days/weeks/months/years where try as you might, you can’t pull your bootstraps up and get your ass in gear? Where no matter what you do, who you talk to, or what concoction of self care elixir you conjure up, you just can’t? Welcome to the club. It’s the reason I couldn’t publish this last week as I’d planned. Or stick to a podcast recording schedule. *nervous laughter* I was chatting with a friend about a week and a half ago — and it was one of those, “No, but how are you really?” conversations. She shared that for reasons — either known and/or unknown — she co ..read more

Meet Self Care: Our New Podcast

Admittedly, this blog is coming out much later than I’d planned. Though, despite the Christmas extravaganza that’s displayed at Target, it’s technically still November, so not too far off… You heard it here last, folks! I started a podcast this month! Meet Self Care, with me, David Self! A/D OGs may remember On Air with Avec David — a two or three episode stint of a podcast that I launched with the start of the blog. This is definietly not that. (And that’s a good thing!) So far, Self Care is everything that I hoped it would become and more. It’s the embodiment of the growth I’ve seen in myse ..read more

How To: Mindfully Meditate

Let me preface this by saying, I’m by no means a prefessional in this space. I’m a couple of years into my practice, and still have a lot to learn. That said, this was how I got my start and what I’ve picked up since then — and remember: judgement free zone. (Plus free resources from actual pros…) Once upon a time, I was a small-town spring chicken with big dreams, a fast metabolism, and an entire collection of unhealthy coping mechanisms. But actually. Like Disney’s beloved red-headed mermaid, I had gadgets and gizmos, aplenty, anxiety and emotion-aversion, galore! Conflict stressed me out ..read more

30 Life Lessons I’ve Learned at 30

While I had big plans to forget about my thirtieth birthday with a week and a half in Paris, Miss Rona had other plans. Instead of macarons and museums, I had Milk Bar cake and a movie. TBH though, it was actually pretty nice. After all, I feel fortunate to have been able to even celebrate my birthday this year — even if it was the big 3-0. I took the opportunity to pause and reflect on my life up to this point — goals I’d set, obstacles encountered, love, love lost, and the decision to get a cat — and came up with a list of lessons I’ve learned thus far. 30 Lessons I’ve Learned in Life (So F ..read more

10 Lessons I’ve Learned Living with My Partner

Editor’s Note: This article was originally published in the Spring Magazine. Last August, I wrote a blog on Avec David chronicling the ten things to consider before moving in with a significant other. I laugh now, reading, “having a month-and-a-half under our belt…” We were so new to cohabitating. (And compared to some of you, we still are.) Three years ago, I moved to Seattle — into an apartment where I lived on my own for the first time in my 26.75 years of existence. Two years and a few months later, I traded in my electronic key fob (and solitude) for a life with someone by my side. And H ..read more
