RULED A SUICIDE: Missouri doctor John Forsyth was found in Beaver Lake with a gunshot wound. (Photo by Stephanie Smittle) The death of Missouri emergency room doctor John Forsyth has been ruled a suicide, Arkansas officials stated yesterday. Forsyth, 49, was a doctor at Mercy Hospital in Cassville. Last year, in the early morning hours of May 21, he texted his fiancee after finishing his overnight shift. He told her that he would see her soon. His family did not hear from him again and he did not show up for his shift the following morning. Surveillance video showed Forsyth walking toward an ..read more

RED-STATE ACTIVISM: An abortion rights rally held earlier this year at the Capitol As readers of this blog know, signatures are currently being gathered to place a constitutional amendment on the ballot that would reverse Arkansas’s abortion ban. If passed, the amendment would not allow the state to “prohibit, penalize, delay, or restrict abortion services within 18 weeks of fertilization.” Those protections would also be extended beyond 18 weeks in cases of rape, incest, fatal fetal anomalies or “to protect a pregnant female’s life or to protect a pregnant female from a physical disord ..read more

If you’ve never experienced an Arkansas Times Margarita Festival, you should keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming fall festival. Fifteen local restaurants had bartender representatives on hand shaking up creative spins on the classic cocktail with sponsor Milagro tequila. A team of high school students won changes to a long-standing semester exam exemption rule at Thursday’s Little Rock School District board meeting.  In 2005, the school board voted to allow semester exam exemptions after a Central High School student, Tyler Fuller, went before the board to make this request. After 18 years, current students felt it was time for a revision.  Two students at Parkview Arts and Science Magnet High School initiated the effort, and a committee of students met on April 3 to hash out revisions. The committee members were: Suthar Nama – 12th grade, Central Hi ..read more

A legislative panel on Thursday narrowly rejected a proposed 20% reduction to Arkansas PBS’ spending authority for fiscal year 2025. Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Jonesboro) has repeatedly been critical of the publicly funded educational television station. He presented the Joint Budget Committee with an amendment to Arkansas PBS’ fiscal 2025 appropriations bill that would have reduced the agency’s spending authority for privately raised funds, from $8.96 million to $7.17 million. Sullivan told his fellow committee members Thursday that the proposed amendment would reduce Arkansas PBS’ spending power b ..read more

Rep. Julie Mayberry (R-Hensley) An amendment from Rep. Julie Mayberry (R-Hensley) to explicitly apply state purchasing law to Arkansas’s seven constitutional officers — including the governor — failed in the Joint Budget Committee’s Special Language Subcommittee yesterday. The amendment appears to be a jab at Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who allegedly did not follow state purchasing laws when she bought a $19,000 lectern from a buddy. The legislative audit report on lecterngate was released on April 15, adding some political fireworks to what initially had been predicted to be a low-dra ..read more
