BRENTWOOD – Liberty coach Andrew Lonsdale was mildly annoyed by the commotion Oakland A’s pitcher Paul Blackburn caused at Thursday’s Bay Valley Athletic League game.  Yes, Liberty graciously switched up the home-and-away two-game series with crosstown rival Heritage to allow them to honor their famous alum on his day off. And Lonsdale and the Lions applauded as Blackburn posed for photos with family and friends.  Oakland A’s pitcher Paul Blackburn holds a sign commemorating his jersey number being retired during a pre-game ceremony at Heritage High School in Brentwood, Calif., on Th ..read more

I wanted to see what was going on with the antiwar folks. At the north end of Sproul Plaza sits Sather Gate. Several young people were holding a large banner, proclaiming that UC has blood on its hands for its investment policies regarding Israel and symbolically blocking the gate. I spoke to three women holding the banner; one was wearing a Star of David. I started to tell them how proud I was of their a ..read more

Gift to Stanford shows university’s hypocrisy Re: “Family gift to Stanford tells conservation tale” (Page A1, April 30). Nice to hear about the Doug and Kris Tompkins’ great work to create and expand 15 national parks in Chile. While I am glad to have their work archived for future research on environmental policy, it is really quite ironic that this should end up at Stanford, which has refused to divest from fossil fuels, the greatest threat to the very lands the Tompkins worked so hard to protect. The Mercury News
by Sal Pizarro

A new street mural will be painted on San Pedro Street in downtown San Jose later this month, and hundreds of people will have a hand in creating it. It’s not too late to be part of it, either. San Jose artist and graphic designer Jim Fonseca, who might be better known as Jimmy Paints, created the colorful design, titled “Threads Woven,” which will be applied to more than 12,000 square feet of the street that’s now closed to vehicles. But that’s a lot of work for one person — or even a dozen — to cover. So Local Color, Adobe and the San Jose Downtown Association have teamed up on a plan to rec ..read more

It didn’t have to end this way. Thirteen Acalanes swimmers had their seasons cut short after the Lafayette school’s coach did not properly register them through an electronic form for this weekend’s North Coast Section championships. High school sports isn’t always about who wins or loses, but in this case, there is definitely no winner. But there is one person who is responsible: Sorry, coach, this one’s on you. Because of one error and strict adherence to the rules, seniors such as Taryn Veronda and Cale Hanson were denied an opportunity to swim on Friday at the Concord Community Pool and po ..read more
