Letter to the editor: You have to earn you home if you want to have one

I’m writing in response to the young lady who wrote a letter titled “Regarding rentals, no one is entitled to a second home.” I couldn’t agree more. I’ve always wanted a house at La Jolla, but I don’t expect others to give it to me. No one is “entitled” to a second home, or a first for that matter, if they’re not willing to take risks and work hard for it. No one owes you a house, Julia. You have to earn it ..read more

Letter to the editor: We need revisions to regulations on lodging businesses

Here we go again. Voters of this state often have nothing to say, but when money contributors come to the game table, politicians started to listen. Suddenly in the game of short-term rentals we have new players sharing their opinions and threatening state officials regarding the consequences of places limits on short-term rentals. VRBO and Airbnb have put their fingers in this dirty game. Now legislation initiatives are suddenly born, and money is trying to tell us that the devil is not that bad. If politicians try to chip away at a chunk ..read more

Letter to the editor: The great dog poop melt-out begins in Summit County

On my walk from the trailhead at the end of Boreas Pass Road this morning I was more than dismayed at the volume of dog feces left littering the parking lot and the first 100 yards of the road past the gate.   My husband and I bought and upkeep two Mutt Mitt stations at the trailhead supplied. We did this over five years ago to try and encourage dog walkers who forget their poop bags to pick up after their pups. This is a personal expense that we gladly take on with the hope of keeping this beautiful road poop-free.   May I suggest that if you walk your dog i ..read more

It’s been just over a year since Proposition 125, which allows Colorado grocery stores to sell wine, went into effect. The impacts of the voter-approved measure have locally-owned liquor stores in Colorado’s mountain towns begging legislators for a lifeline. Stores on the Western Slope have reported taking substantial financial hits now that the market has shifted. “We’re literally fighting for our lives right now,” Central Park Liquors part-owner Greg Neely said. Neely’s store in Steamboat Springs is next to a City Market grocery store. Following the passing of Proposition 125, his store ..read more

Summit Daily
by Joyce Mosher Get Wild

“The Blue Marble” is the first fully illuminated photograph of Earth taken from outer space in 1972 by the Apollo 17 crew as they made their way to the moon.  Though blurry and partial images of Earth, most taken by satellite, had been published throughout the 1960s, “The Blue Marble” is the first complete color image of Earth taken by a human astronaut. More important than the moon rocks they collected, this photo shows the Earth in the center of the frame, floating in space. It is possible to clearly see the African continent, as well as the Antarctica south polar ice cap ..read more

As Colorado prepares for annual April 20 festivities, the Colorado Department of Transportation is rolling out a sobering reminder: Drive high, get a DUI. Saturday, April 20 — a date that echoes the cannabis culture slang term “420” — will be host to an assortment of cannabis-themed events through Colorado, which legalized the drug for recreational consumption more than a decade ago. “It is a big week for marijuana consumers in Colorado, and we want to prevent anyone from getting behind the wheel if they’ve been consuming cannabis, alcohol or other drugs,” CDOT Office of Transportation Safety ..read more

After fighting through the wind at last week’s meet, the Summit High School track and field team returned to Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood on Thursday, April 11, for a day that was prime for impressive track and field performances. With the occasional slight breeze and mild springtime temperatures, the Tigers set several new school-record marks and finished at the top of several events to head into spring break with a good amount of energy.  Leading the charge for Summit was senior hurdler Cam Fox, who after months of work was finally rewarded with a school-record time in the 110-m ..read more
