Editorial: The Supreme Court cannot allow homelessness to be a crime

If you are homeless and have nowhere to go — neither a temporary shelter bed nor a permanent home — can you be fined or, worse, jailed for sleeping on a sidewalk? Or is that cruel and unusual punishment? That’s the question that the Supreme Court wrestled with Monday when it heard oral arguments in the case of Grants Pass v. Johnson regarding the Oregon city’s ordinance allowing police to fine or jail homeless people for sleeping outside. A federal district court ruled that the law violated the 8th Amendment prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment and blocked it from being enforc ..read more

Opinion: George Will: So, 112 ignoble, infantile Republicans voted to endanger civilization
Daily Camera
by George F. Will

Stoking the passion that is their excuse for pandering — the nihilism of a febrile minority in their party — a majority of House Republicans voted last Saturday to endanger civilization. Hoping to enhance their political security in their mostly safe seats, and for the infantile satisfaction of populist naughtiness (insulting a mostly fictitious “establishment”), they voted to assure Vladimir Putin’s attempt to erase a European nation. George WillWashington Post The Republican Party was founded as a noble rejection of the most consequential bad thing Congress has ever done: the 1854 Kansas-Neb ..read more

Letters to the editor: Safety should come before seconds; become part of the solution; avoid nuclear war in Middle East

Safety should come before seconds As we await the City’s design alternatives to better accommodate bicycle traffic on Iris Avenue (to be unveiled April 27th at Columbine Elementary, 10 a.m. to noon), let’s correct a factual error from a recent letter to the editor. It needs to be clear to all that both the “right-sizing” of Folsom in 2015 and one of the proposed plans for Iris do not represent a change “from a 4-lane street to a 2-lane street,” as the letter claims. Rather, the Folsom change and one of many Iris alternatives is a 3-lane street with a center turn lane. This allows eno ..read more

Guest opinion: Leslie Glustrom: Time for a new electric utility paradigm – and competition to help achieve it

By Leslie Glustrom After close to 20 years at the Colorado Public Utilities Commission, I still wonder what parts of “climate crisis” and “extreme weather,” are not understood by Xcel, Colorado’s largest Investor-Owned-Utility (IOU), and its regulators at the PUC. After many years of advocacy by customers in Boulder and around the state, Xcel is making steady progress on decarbonizing their electrical system. The good people who work for Xcel deserve recognition for this progress, but Xcel and its regulators seem to think we can experience a “climate crisis” but still have ..read more

Ask Amy: Daughter pays for mother’s abusive behavior
Daily Camera
by Amy Dickinson

Dear Amy: Have I been gaslighted? My mother was a difficult person. She was often not nice to my sister-in-law. I admired my SIL for taking the high road and for being respectful toward my mother, and I told her so many times. I bumped heads big time with my mother, too, but had a good last six years when she moved near me and dementia mellowed her out. My mother died five years ago and my sister-in-law reminds me often of how awful she was (my brother has no fond memories of childhood, and lets his wife do the talking). The last time my SIL brought this up, I stopped her and said that al ..read more

Boys lacrosse: Fairview surging after win over Monarch
Daily Camera
by Brent W. New

Fairview lacrosse’s first win over Monarch in three years was tailored in the narrative the Knights have been pushing for a while now. A young attacking core took another step forward in its growth process, a veteran defense remained strong, and Fairview coach Matthew Kelley’s team picked up a critical win for its postseason hopes, beating the Coyotes 13-8 on its home turf Wednesday night. “There’s still a lot of work to be done but moving in (the right) direction is exciting,” Kelley said. “It’s why we do this.” On paper, a third straight win on the season for the Knights (6-5, 3-2 5A League ..read more

With control of series in the balance, Avalanche goalie Alexandar Georgiev crafted his redemption story
Daily Camera
by Corey Masisak

WINNIPEG — The Colorado Avalanche desperately needed a save, and Alexandar Georgiev delivered the biggest one of his season to date. Colorado trailed 2-1 in Game 2 at Canada Life Centre. The Avs had just squandered a four-minute power play, missed on a Grade-A scoring chance and allowed the go-ahead goal on a fantastic one-handed tip-in by Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele. Given the way Game 1 had gone, it’s not that much of a stretch to say that Game 2 and clear control of the series hung breathlessly in the balance Tuesday night when Josh Manson and Jack Johnson had a miscommunication, an ..read more
