Lives Well Lived
A Millennials Divine Defense

Last week I told you about the tragic deaths of Chad, Andrea, and Merry Freeman, and I wrote what I prayed was a message of hope to their children – a message that they could carry with them through this incredible season of sorrow. But a strange thing occurred to me this past Wednesday night – the night of the viewing[1].  While standing in line to speak to what I could only imagine were 4 devastated young women, I watched a slide show from the lives of Chad, Andrea, and Merry. And while most folks around me wept as the pictures forced them to confront the shocking loss of 3 vibrant, bea ..read more

Joy Comes in the Morning

Chad Freeman hired me on at Bosch 9 years ago. I worked for him first as an engineer and later as a neighboring department’s group leader supporting his.  During those 9 years, I never heard him speak negatively about anyone. He always chose to see the good in people – never the bad. He was the living embodiment of what Jesus meant when he said we are to “love our neighbor as ourself”. Chad and his wife, Andrea, along with his mother, Meredith, were tragically killed in a car accident leaving behind 3 beautiful girls: Hannah, Meredith, and Katie This is for them… I cannot express, in any ..read more

Human Suffering and God
A Millennials Divine Defense
by Justin Goethe

The ubiquity of human suffering seems to directly contradict the Christian belief in an all-knowing, all-powerful, and all-loving God.  Trying to find a “reason” for our pain is an affront to our human conscience. We appear left with only 2 options: A) God is not truly loving or B) God is not all-powerful. And of course, if either one of these premises are true, then God is no God at all. A Story of Loss I have a friend that served as a United States Army Ranger. One night, after a few too many beers, he told me a story of his time spent overseas.  Taliban insurgents had sh ..read more

God’s Existence Is Not Scientific
A Millennials Divine Defense

Atheists often speak in scientific terms to support their view of God’s non-existence. They’ll say things like, “I do not see any evidence that God exists, so I reject your hypothesis.”  This idea that God’s existence is a scientific hypothesis that can be tested either confirmed or rejected is incompatible with the definition of science.  According to Google, science is defined as, “the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.”  Even the most fervent ..read more

Doctrine Don’t Do No Good!
A Millennials Divine Defense
by Justin Goethe

That’s right. The spiritually lost won’t be found with high theology or doctrine.  Want proof? I recently posted a Sunday school lesson written by Dr. Sam Wood. The lesson promoted a preterist interpretation of Revelation. It explained that the esoteric language of Revelation was written in response to the events of 1st century Jerusalem by John of Patmos. For example, the “mark of the beast” wasn’t intended as a mark on the body used to identify those condemned by Christ at the end of the world. According to Dr. Wood, it was an actual coin given to those that had worshiped the Roman impe ..read more

Finding Your Way Back Home
A Millennials Divine Defense

Lost Everyone knows what it’s like to be lost. Like a child separated from its mother, you’re unsure of which way to go. You search for something familiar, something that can help you find your way back…. Something that can help you find your way home. In early 1941 — the high-water mark of the German military offensive in Britain — the British people had an intimate understanding of what it meant to feel lost. The nighttime bombing raids on London and other British cities had left 43,000 Britons dead and over 100,000 wounded. The rest of the nation was left unnerved and afraid — unsure of wha ..read more

Personal Faith: How to Build a Bridge Back to God
A Millennials Divine Defense
by Justin Goethe

Millennials Haven’t Developed “Personal Faith” American Millennials are leaving the Christian faith in droves. According to a new Pew Research poll, 40% now identify as “no religion”. And, believe it or not, this is actually MUCH better than the decline seen in most European countries.  But why? Why have so many of us abandoned the faith of our forefathers?  I believe it all boils down to a very simple answer.  We have never made our faith personal. How did we get here? If you are a Millennial like me, you have probably thought of your faith as a sort of cultural identity ..read more

Is COVID-19 a Sign of the Apocalypse? Probably not.
A Millennials Divine Defense
by Justin Goethe

Introduction This week’s Wednesday blog post comes by way of an email from Dr. Sam Wood. A retired physician, Dr. Wood currently serves as a Sunday School teacher at Bethany United Methodist Church. Dr. Wood sent this email to his class in response to multiple inquiries as to his opinion on whether COVID-19 was a sign of the pending apocalypse. I thought his response very applicable in light of current events and my most recent post on eisegesis vs. exegesis (another topic I learned from Dr. Wood). I hope you enjoy it as well. Is the Apocalypse Upon Us? I have received several ..read more

Eisegesis vs. Exegesis: What’s the Difference?
A Millennials Divine Defense
by Justin Goethe
4y ago
“Eisegesis vs exegesis” is the most important conversation that no one in the Church is having. Peruse a Christian message board. You will quickly find that there are seemingly endless differences in the interpretation of scripture. How can we determine the theological importance of the Bible if we can’t settle on what it actually means?  Understanding the difference between eisegesis and exegesis is the first step in providing Biblical clarity. Definitions For starters, let’s agree on the definitions for both eisegesis and exegesis. Eisegesis is the process of interpreting a te ..read more
