There is a thread of American Patriotism inextricably woven into the idea of doing for others. Using the American military as the bond you get the foundation of a belief structure that makes the United States of America a deity. This is a rallying cry. A thesis statement to write on banners, run campaigns and justify any and all actions. Herein lies the complexities of the military industrial complex. The men and women who serve this country, sacrifice their lives for us. They are brave, honorable and are deserving of all admiration. The same cannot be said for the government that exploits the ..read more

One of the joys of fandom is watching the greats operate at the highest level. Seeing a master of their craft work is something that stays with you for the rest of your life. You tell your kids and grandkids about it and reminisce with friends about it. With the arts, this experience is heightened because the window for greatness isn’t bound by age and/or physical capabilities. So with a great artist, we can experience their greatness for multiple decades. Such is the case with Martin Scorsese. The legendary director is well into his 7th decade directing films and still appears to be operating ..read more

Love at First Sight: Choosing Love

The balancing act of a romantic comedy is complicated. You have to present love in a genuine way, while still making it larger than life. Capture the power of love, while remaining practical enough for each person to relate to it. Manage the fantasy of the romantic and the heartbreak of the cynic. Always teetering on the edge of “too much” in whatever variation the viewer feels it applies in that instant. Tasks that all seem impossible, and for plenty of rom coms they are. But the good ones usually overcome these challenges and find this balance through earnestness. By leaning into the inheren ..read more

No One Will Save You: Creating an Experience

What is the best way to deal with extreme guilt or trauma? For some, it’s natural to isolate. A self-imposed seclusion can be freeing since avoiding discomfort is the goal. In today’s society, it seems easier. We are so in tune with our emotions and feelings (both collectively and individually) that this behavior isn’t just understood but supported. It’s then reflected in our art, and there is no better home for the visual expression of this reaction to trauma than the horror genre. A genre that at its best visualizes feelings and emotions in the most complex, creative and interesting ways. Th ..read more

“Heels”: Season 2, Episode 8 Recap

Season 2 of Heels has come to an end. Finding a similar place of dramatic uncertainty as Season 1. While the dramatics, emotional catharsis, and excitement of a finale episode are always enjoyable, it doesn’t hide the roller coaster that is Season 2. Which ultimately makes the finale, entitled “High Flying” a good representation of the season, because it was a roller coaster in itself.  This episode, and the season at large, is a mixture of exciting moments and head scratchers, good story and forced plot. There are moments in this episode as good as any in the entire series, and unfortuna ..read more

“Heels”: Season 2, Episode 7 Recap

Arriving at the penultimate episode of Season 2 creates an interesting feeling. Season 2 has accomplished some impressive feats and created some incredible episodes of television. It’s also has some surprising missteps and letdowns. Penultimate episodes can be truly great and in some of the best shows, they can even be better than the finale. That push to the finale is thrilling and the pace usually picks up. Which is why “interesting” is the word to use here. Heels is in a bit of a messy place heading into Episode 7, entitled “The Things That Matter”. The main confrontation appears to be wher ..read more

“Heels”: Season 2, Episode 5 Recap

The roller coaster of Season 2 of Heels continues this week with Episode 5, “Who the Hell is the Condamned?”. After a bit of a letdown last week, Episode 5 is great. As straightforward of an episode of Heels as you can get, and it is exactly what we needed. With the focus turning more toward in ring story a lot of characters and subplots stood ringside this week. Wild Bill, Jack and Staci stay in the background and allow our focus turn elsewhere. In terms of character this week was for Crystal and the story focused on the cross promotional story of the DWL vs FWD. It was a great choice because ..read more

Expecting Episode 4, entitled “Heavy Heads”, to match the quality of Episode 3 is a little unreasonable. Matching that slow paced, thoughtful, intense energy is difficult. Particularly for a series about wrestling. There are a lot of plates spinning, and opportunities all throughout a season when the table needs to be set for future storylines. Generally, a drop off accompanies that. With the best series, you either don’t know or find the table setting just as interesting. With most series, however, all momentum stops and you feel the reset. Episode 4 is the latter of these examples and thus ..read more

I love to see a show hit its stride. Seeing it in its pocket and operating at its highest potential, with every decision being the right one, makes for a thrilling experience. With Episode 3 “Discord”, we see Heels in this exact spot. It’s absolutely firing on all cylinders and each new episode feels like its best. There are two signifiers of this in Episode 3. First is the amount of tension generated in two specific scenes, Jack and Ace at the hotel and the confrontation with Charlie Gully and FDW. Second, is the balance of this episode. While delivering in anticipated confrontations, this ep ..read more

If you’re a casual movie-goer you probably remember the excitement surrounding a particular weekend in April 2019. People of all ages came together to watch Avengers: Endgame resulting in record setting box office numbers in its opening weekend. Unless you were living under a rock, it was impossible to escape it. The marketing was everywhere, the excitement was shared by seemingly everyone and the box office numbers reflected this. Fast forward four years later, we’re in a very different collective headspace. Movie theaters have suffered drastically since 2019 and so have its patrons. And then ..read more
