Boy-Friendly Ideas for Chol Hamoed
Between Carpools
by Victoria Dwek

Boys, and teenage boys especially, are notoriously hard to entertain when it’s family time. Last midwinter, we rounded up some great ideas for both out-of-the-house and at-home activities that older kids/tweens/teens might enjoy in this post (check it out!). We admitted then, that entertaining little kids is relatively easy. It gets harder when the kids are older, and it gets particularly hard to decide on an activity that the whole family would enjoy when you have teenage boys. And while we have the same struggles brainstorming ideas as you do, we came up with a few more that have worked for ..read more

Sweet Potato Chips
Between Carpools

Sweet potato chips are great in salad, but not only for salad! This is how to do it right. Ever since we became big fans of Aunt Ruchy’s Sweet Potato Chip Salad, frying sweet potato strips became an essential part of our Pesach prep. Once we had these sweet potato chips in our freezer, though, we realized that they became useful for way more than just giving a great crunch (and a gorgeous look) to our salad.  They became the perfect way to garnish a (very brown) piece of meat–they have that great punch of color. And who doesn’t love eating some chips? Same goes with the soup that needed t ..read more

Pesach and Your Child with Sensory Sensitivities
Between Carpools

Yes, you can enjoy Pesach with your child. We all know about the “Four Sons:” the wise one, the wicked son, the simple son and the one who doesn’t know how to ask. Why don’t we ever hear about the son who accidentally spills every single one of the four cups of wine – and the one who can’t stand the singing at the seder because it’s ‘too much noise’? Every year before Pesach time, we hear from the parents we work with about that son and daughter – and how the parents are dreading the upcoming Yom Tov.  From the late seder nights that throw off their child’s routine to the lack of familiar ..read more

Between Carpools

With lots and lots of sautéed leeks and onions, this is one of the favorites we’re looking forward to again this Pesach. My friend Malky Blum calls me whenever she comes up with something that she knows will make a perfect BCP recipe. Do you remember these Lemony Jalapeños? Yup, that’s also from Malky. This one along with the Roasted Eggplant Pepper Dip were the two new, fresh dips we enjoyed last Pesach. They’re completely different so make them both! Print Leek Jalapeno Dip Ingredients 3 leek or 2 large, halved and thinly sliced 1 onion, finely diced 1-2 Tbsp oil 1 jalapeño, halved an ..read more

Between Carpools

It’s fun and more efficient to work like a line cook when you’re doing that pre-Yomtov cooking marathon. Do you like to cook directly from a recipe? Do you cook with open cookbooks on your counters? Flip back and forth to find the recipe you’ll be preparing next? And then maybe something you planned on making falls through the cracks and you don’t notice until it’s time to serve it? We have a fun little hack for you that can help control the cooking marathon chaos. Print each recipe on its own page. If it’s from a cookbook, take a picture of the page and print that. Put away all the books and ..read more

Frequent flier tips
Between Carpools
by Leah Schapira

Having international family means we’ve traveled a lot. With and without our kids. So now we’re sharing some frequent traveler tips that might work for you, too. The first thing we’ll say is don’t unpack. Before you think we live out of suitcases, what we mean is don’t unpack the things you need to take along on every trip.  You should have a dedicated bag of toiletries – and refill that after a trip, not before – and never have to remember all the little things you’d need to fill it up. Chargers, adapters, converters, portable battery packs – these should all be set aside for travel only ..read more
