A Half Pound of A Cappella, Please?

SHARE POST About an hour ago, I was checking out at Publix grocery store and my attractive young checkout girl was singing to herself. As I placed my bacon on the counter, I said “You seem to be in a great mood!” “Thank you”, she answered pushing her curly brown hair off her shoulder. “I was singing a song I heard in church last Sunday. We had a group that sang with no instruments at all. It was amazing! Now, I can’t get the song out of my head.” She shook her head back and forth as if that might help. “Oh, yes” I said, “A cappella… that can be very beautiful.” “No,” she corrected. ” I don’t ..read more

SHARE POST Beeps. Like Russia and insurrectionists, they’re invading us. Think of Big Brother when you challenge the beeps, rings, and buzzers that control our lives. They tell us when to get up and go to sleep, how to cook, close the refrigerator door, and the irritating noise of games. There are often questionable beeps – is there a fire or does my alarm need a new battery? Is it my phone or spam? Is my computer losing it or telling me it needs to go to sleep? Whether it’s us, our kids, or grandkids, the beeps, rings, and buzzers are as annoying as a bad commercial repeated ten times during ..read more

Stand with the Ukrainian People

SHARE POST Anything that I write in my little blog seems so insignificant and petty compared to what is happening in Ukraine. A Florida church seems to be sending a great deal of help to both the Ukrainians who are fighting for their country and for the millions of refugees forced to leave. Through St. Mary Protectress Ukrainian Catholic Church, you can use Amazon to send supplies to fighters (i.e. night goggles, bandages) or other means to donate towels, blankets, food, etc. to refugees. Please check it out and do what you can to help. I know nothing about this organization other than I saw o ..read more

SHARE POST This past weekend, my sister was walking with her 9 year old grandson in a quaint beach town in California. As they walked, they passed a homeless man who had claimed 3 consecutive palm trees as his home. Between 2 of them, he had stretched a worn hammock across for his bedroom. In another spot, he had placed a refrigerator box and a camping chair for his dining area. Finally, next to the 3rd palm tree, he stood pouring bottled water over his head and chest as he “showered” in the street. As my sister and her grandson passed by, the homeless man smiled a jagged grin and said, “Can y ..read more

SHARE POST (This is going to be an annual repeat tradition) Let’s be honest, Ladies, no woman looks forward to her annual gynecological exam.  For men out there, you have no clue what we must endure.  Recently, I scheduled my first annual exam and PAP smear with a new gynecologist in Florida.   Like all women, when the day for my gyno appointment arrived, I paid great attention to the little details that a man would never even consider.  What shoes will keep my feet from perspiring so that they smell pretty mid day?  How does my French ped ..read more

SHARE POST Are seniors really happy away from their families? For years, before moving to Florida, I worked with a photo of my husband and I fishing on Cocoa Beach taped to my computer. It was a constant reminder of what I was working for…that someday… we would retire in FL. Now, the dream has come true. We own a beautiful home, surrounded by amazing palm trees and Bird of Paradise plants. Daily, we sip coffee in our lanai enjoying mild temperatures while our children and family are freezing up north. Are we living the dream? I’m not really sure yet. Of course, life is much easier when your bi ..read more

Pickleball no more…

SHARE POST My aching joints are grateful! For the past 5 years, I have played pickleball every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings at 8:30. Over those years, I have observed payer after player leaving the game for a few months or longer to get knee, shoulder, and back surgery. I thought it odd that so many needed treatment, but we were getting old. After long and painful recoveries, most players usually returned to play pickleball and were a little more careful. Although, I have not needed surgery, I have suffered after ever session of playing from what I believed was severe arthritis. M ..read more

SHARE POST 1994 was a hallmark year. Stephen Spielberg won his first directing Oscar for Schindler’s List. Friends aired for the first of ten seasons. Baseball went on strike. Nothing compared to the bald computer guy from Wall Street who quit his job and launched Amazon from his garage. The world would never be the same. Jeff Bezos, the second richest man in the world (as of this writing, behind #1 Elon Musk), took Amazon to Seattle along with a meteoric rise in celebrity, money, and success. He brought some great stuff with him. Check out Amazon products like Canned Unicorn Meat Lunch Spread ..read more

SHARE POST Questioning Post Office Efficiency My friend and neighbor, Sonia, is originally from Germany. She’s lived in FL for over 30 years and flew to Germany each year to visit her family. Since COVID impacted the world, she’s been unable to fly to see her mother–who is now in a nursing home in Germany. Because Sonia was so saddened by this, she decided to come out of retirement to get a part time job as a receptionist in a nursing home. With a little extra money, she could better afford to send her mother a package of small gifts once a month. In October, 2021, Sonia prepared and shipped h ..read more

SHARE POST Generation Gap? Throughout history, it has been a struggle for seniors to understand teens. This may be because we expect them to appreciate the experiences that we have endured. At the same time, we have never been young during their times and faced exactly the same challenges. Therefore, there is always a generation gap. When I was teaching freshman English, we used to read a novel called Harold and Maude.  It was a sweet story of an unlikely friendship between nineteen-year-old Harold and seventy-nine-year-old Maude. At one point of the book, Maude takes Harold to the church ..read more
