Good Morning All Following on from my rather large 28mm Ancient Greek Army (see Here ), it was time to turn my attention to the next phase of this project - the Macedonians/Successor forces. Over the last 6 months I have bought six boxes of the Warlord Hames Successor starter boxes off ebay for around £60 a pop. These give you 100 Phalangites (pikes), eight horse and one war elephant. Personally I hate the Warlord metal horse and these have all been sold off and the funds used to purchase 4 packs of Victrix Greek Heavy Cavalry. These have all now been assembled and primedas Ale ..read more

28mm Greek Army - Part 6 - All Complete

Well its been a long time coming but I can now finally reveal the full Ancient Greek Army in glorious 28mm. This has been very much a labour of love and I think the effort has all been worthwhile. For the previous post head HERE I do have one admission though - I thought I had painted up 32 units of Hoplites. It transpires that there are only 31. Which means there are only 992 rank and file Hoplites not the 1000 claimed. However there are at least 8 on the command stand bases so its not too wrong - STOP PRESS....I found the other unit in another box - it just didnt make the photo. The f ..read more

28mm Ancient Greek Army - part 5 - Skirmishers and light troops

Morning All Following on from the cavalry I can now deliver the Greek light troops and the skirmish units (peltasts and bows). These are all Victrix plastic and metal Warlord figures. There are a few Foundry cretan bows mixed in. If unaware Victrix sell reinforcement packs of bows and slingers. For previous post in this series head HERE I have yet to decide on the numbers in each unit but at the moment I can field - 34 bases of bows, 34 bases of slingers and 25 bases of light troops. The Bows and slingers are mounted two to a base whereas the light foot are three to a base. This help ..read more

Battle of Lewes - A 28mm Wargame

Good Morning All One of the things we are particularly proud of in the Shed was our epic attempt to refight all the battles of the Wars of the Roses in chronological order (which we were successful). We have also fought all the major actions of 1066 (Hastings, Fulford Gate and Stamford Bridge) plus a large number of the battles in the English Civil War. This year I wanted to host a pair of games that featured in the second Barons War - namely the battles of Lewes and Evesham. This post deals with the first of these battles. Before I start with the background etc I wanted to offer my thanks to ..read more

28mm Ancient Greek Army part 3 - The Commanders

Good Morning A few months back I shared some pictures of my growing Greek Army in 28mm...at last count I could field 32 units each with 32 figures over 1000 figures. At that point the project stalled. I still had to finish the basing on over 250 stands plus all the additional units needed assembling, painting etc. More pictures of the Hoplites can be seen HERE Over the last six weeks I have hit a purple batch of painting and the army is slowly coming towards a successful completion. Up first are the Commanders - these are all based on round bases to differentiate them from the ra ..read more

Battle of Mons Graupius - A 28mm Ancient Roman Wargame
Shed Wars

Afternoon All A few years back myself and a good friend put together a project focussing on the Roman Invasion of Britannia in glorious 28mm. Between us we managed to put together two Legions alongside hundreds of auxiliaries (archers, cavalry and infantry). Facing this mighty force were over 2000 Ancient Britons and Celts. Sadly these chaps frequent the table on a rare occasion so we felt this ought to change and over the last couple of Monday nights we have tried to recreate the Roman Invasion of Caledonia (Scotlands) and the lesser known battle of Mons Graupius.  17ft table ..read more

Good Morning All & a Happy New Year !! Its been three weeks since I last posted and with Christmas and the New Years festivities out of the way it was time to get back to the serious business of gaming in the shed. The first couple of weeks of the year saw a few boardgames being played and an annual outing of my Predators game - all good fun. However one of my shed warriors, Vince, was keen to put together a large Peninsular battle based on the battle of Talavera.  How could I resist? In an upcoming post I'll detail the orders of battle, objectives and how we translated this battle to ..read more

A Very British Christmas War

Afternoon All & Festive Greetings On Monday the Shed welcomed eight players for a bit of VBCW mayhem using Bolt Action Rules. It was an opportunity to layout my interwar British terrain and get some of my armour onto the table. As opposed to a conventional rectangular table we created an L Shaped table with the British Fascists defending the British Pie Factory (BP). Opposing them were a ragtail mob of Anglican League, Royal Navy and Communist Partisans. Alastair, Mark, David and Tony would lead the attackers and I gave them 30% more forces. Defending the factory from forward positio ..read more
