Kea – Turn It Around
Grown Folks Music
by Ivan Orr
1y ago
Friend to GFM Kea is back with new music that is a musical reminder in the form of “Turn It Around”. This haunting lament puts into perspective that the current circumstance doesn’t always have to be the end of the story, in fact it doesn’t even have to be an entire chapter of you are open to change. Change is never easy but if you’re interested in forward motion it’s very necessary. “Turn It Around” is beautifully constructed and performed with a visual that compliments and tells a compelling story of its own. Kea weaves a melody here that has some wonderful surprises for the ear and in the ..read more

Val B. King: So Many Ways
Grown Folks Music

Val B. King’s sophomore release So Many Ways is what you get when you combine talent, creativity and integrity for a musical production. Certainly being the granddaughter of of legendary King of the Blues, B.B. King doesn’t hurt, but Val B. King’s talent goes before her and we are all the better for this irrefutable fact. Produced by the imitable Frank McComb So Many Ways gives the listener so many shades of the smooth and soothing side of music. From the opener “Ooh You” that features Najee the life that runs through this nine song set is music and not gimmickry. #Growns we’ve been here befo ..read more

Last weekend Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre played host to two Legends of Hip Hop concerts! The lineup included Hip Hop veterans Chubb Rock, Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane and KRS-One.  Rakim was scheduled as the headliner however, he wasn’t in attendance. Despite Rakim’s absence the others held it down. Host MC Lightfoot kept the crowd laughing all night. Comedian Lav Love and former Yo! MTV Raps host Ed Lover made appearances. The crowd was hype both nights and a true Hip Hop fan traveled from Puerto Rico with vinyl albums in hand. Big Daddy Kane hopped off the stage and didn’t miss a beat ..read more

Sydney Raneé “Wake Up And Get It” EP
Grown Folks Music

Sydney Raneé · Wake Up And Get It The Wake Up And Get It EP from friend to GFM Sydney Raneé is what I would refer to as a “Summertime Situation Soundtrack”. You know about those? The summertime situation? Something might start brewing around Memorial Day and by the middle of June… you get what I’m saying. These “situations” can go either way as in really, really wonderful or perhaps not. Zero middle ground. Now imagine having some music to speak to such times. These are the vibes I get from Sydney: guarded but free, regret but YOLO, the heat of July and the chill of January. Music that speaks ..read more

Dirtsa – Truly didi, + Official Music Video

#Growns, Today marks the sophomore EP release of Truly didi from Franco-Cameroonian melodic emcee Dirtsa.Truly didi is described as “a letter serving as an ode to her heritage as well as a poised call to action to fight racial injustice as we strive for a greater humanity.” In listening to the set there are so many facets of life that we contend within display. In particular the track “Control” gets to the heart of the matter that we all can relate as we struggle to relate to the people that are particularly close to us. Dirsta is working in the way that art works best: working it out. Workin ..read more
