Okay I know the first thing you are thinking is that I spelled "Tales" wrong. Well I can forgive you for thinking that but I promise, this is actually, a tale about horses. A STORY OF GROWTH. Once upon a time I was just a full time needle felt artist. I was happily stabbing my way through life-size joeys, emu chicks, echidnas, quokkas, lambs and so much more. Dobby is the best core wool producer of my first years breeding. He is the son of Esme (Merino) and Ragnar (Border Lester/Poll Dorset x Merino). I would really like to encourage everyone to process their own raw fleece. Not only for the great techniques you will learn, but also to avoid processing costs. It's a great way to create core for yourself so that you can experiment freely with your needle felting. In the following videos I will show you a couple of my favorite methods to process raw fleece into core wool. First and foremost I would like to disclose that I am, in no way, an expert on dyeing fibre. In fact I am a complete novice and have only really ever experimented. For this reason I thought it would be nice to tell you how easy it is to have some fun and try dyeing yourself. When I first started to needle felt the only fibre I could get, in bucket loads, was “Old Mate Stanley’s” fine Merino fleeces. At the time I had no idea about fibre at all. I have always loved creating my own custom packaging and now that I have so many delicate sculptures the importance of it is even more evident. In my opinion there is only one way to protect hairy 3D sculptures and that is with SATIN. Both when creating them and when packaging them. I emphasized 'satin' because its important; not silk, not velvet, not even jersey or lycra! No, no, NO it MUST be SATIN. Just like a satin pillow case stops the fuzzies when sleeping the satin also protects the sculptures.
