(Image Credit: Marvel Comics)   Living up to the expectations of your legacy is something complicated even for the best of us. It happens in every single aspect of life and it certainly happens in comics, with a lot of great stories that perhaps don’t live up to people’s expectations simply because they have been hyped way too much due to its cultural relevance and influence in the medium throughout the years. This, my friends, is not that case. Spider-Man’s 1965 three-issue storyline, If This Be My Destiny...!, written by Stan Lee and drawn by Steve Ditko (co-creator of everybody’s favo ..read more

Why the Riddler is such a good villain for the Matt Reeves Batman film

(Image Credit: DC Comics)   There is a lot of anticipation for the upcoming The Batman film, directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne. And while I’m still not completely sold on this project (that’s a discussion for another article), there was a particular decision that I found very appealing, which was the decision of having Edward Nigma, also known as The Riddler, as the villain of the film. I personally loved this decision because it means that we’re not going to rely yet again on the Joker for another Batman adaptation. Don’t get me wrong, the Joker is the ..read more

Last of the Irin Vol: 1 Review I A creative mash-up of history, and sci-fi

If you want to know more about this comic, please check its website here.   It’s always interesting to run into new comic books that you never saw coming. Mostly because it’s fun to see what new concepts creators can come up with and how artists can bring said concepts to life, always delivering something that can be quite different from the rest if done correctly. In that regard, I ran into this comic called Last of the Irin, which is an indie comic that is bound to be released in the coming months and it is made by a writer that goes by the pseudonym of Wildfry and that combines ..read more

Batman vs The Predator I An fine example of how to make a crossover
Animated Apparel Company | Comic books

Comic book crossovers between companies don’t tend to gel well in my opinion. It often relies on fanservice and a lot of storytelling shenanigans in order for the crossover to work. So when I see a comic that is doing this, I tend to avoid it, which is what I did for a while with the first Batman/Predator crossover. That was until I discovered that Dave Gibbons (Watchmen artist) wrote the story and the Kubert brothers, Andy and Adam, drew and inked it. Suddenly, it piqued my interest. Made in the early 90s, this Batman/Predator is one of the finest examples of how to make a crosso ..read more

Review of The Eighth issue #1 here Adam Lawson is a writer that is well-known for his ability to keep you interested in reading his work. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Adam for our blog and he discussed the hard work that it takes to become a successful writer in the American entertainment industry, which is something that is well-showcased with his creator-owned comic book, The Eighth. I already reviewed the first issue of this comic, showing David’s first contact with the weapon of the Sumerian gods. In this second issue, we get more action, character development, and a l ..read more

The indie scene in the comic book industry is a very interesting discussion topic. Due to the rise in popularity of the internet, social media and crowdfunding, comic book creators now have more freedom and resources to make their own properties and deliver them to their buyers, creating an alternative business model for a lot of creators. Whilst that model may not be used by Marvel or DC it helps establish a closer relationship with their fans. An example of that is writer Adam Lawson, who has worked in film and TV for quite some time, and who recently finished his crowdfunding campai ..read more

Copyright by Marvel Comics.   This article was inspired because of a YouTube video made by Comics, by Perch. It’s a really great channel that talks about multiple comic book topics and definitely worth checking out! “Remember my face! It's the last thing you're ever going to see... and I want you to carry the memory of it straight to HELL!” Frank Castle. Anybody that has followed the comic book industry on a regular basis knows that there’s always a new controversy occurring. Whether it’s something to be outraged about, something to complain about or something to be critical of, i ..read more

THE EIGHTH Review I A complex, fun, and entertaining work

I have been very critical about the comic book industry in several of my articles and I still stand by those statements I’ve made. When it comes to the mainstream comic book industry, there are a lot of changes that still need to be made and I don’t see big publishers like Marvel and DC making the necessary decisions to lead by example. So, it’s always nice to go to the indie market and find new comics that are not attached to a certain way of working and are primarily focused on delivering a good story. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but the effort with storytelling should a ..read more

Interview with the legendary comic book artist and writer William Messner-Loebs
Animated Apparel Company | Comic books

William Messner-Loebs is a name that most old school comic book fans are probably familiar with. He is a writer and artist that started in the industry in the 80s and made a name for himself with great runs in titles such as Flash and Wonder Woman, plus a very substantial career with his creator-owned project, Journey: The Adventures of Wolverine MacAlistaire, and the licensed property, Jonny Quest, that he did back in the 80s. Among his greatest achievements we have the creations of characters such as the Amazon Artemis (the second Wonder Woman) and Linda Park (the love interest of th ..read more

(Image credit: DC Comics) Writer Brad Meltzer is an interesting case in the comic book industry. Mostly known as the author of several best-selling thriller novels, he had a stint in the mid-2000s writing comics for DC and while most of his output is overshadowed by the controversial Identity Crisis miniseries (a story that is going to be addressed in another opportunity), we shouldn’t forget some of his best work in the industry, such as the Justice League’s The Tornado’s Path storyline or what we have today, Green Arrow’s The Archer’s Quest. One of the most interesting Gree ..read more
