Why Are My Photos Blurry? One of the leading causes of blurry, out of focus photographs is movement. However, other factors lead to unsharp images too. And although better glass (read more expensive) is a factor in image quality, it does not mean you can’t capture crisp photos with less expensive kit lenses. So, here are my top five tips for capturing sharp photos, and none of them require you to spend a penny. 1. Use A Fast Shutter Speed As I mentioned above, movement is probably the primary source of soft images. That movement can come from two sources. It can come from unsteady hands (camer ..read more

It has been over seven weeks since I began this daily photography diary chronicling my time under stay-at-home orders due to the Coronavirus pandemic. British Columbia has flattened the curve now. Starting mid next week, we will start our slow transition towards the new “normal.” I’m sure that life will look much different than it did pre-Covid. How great it will be to hug again! Reflections Over these past seven weeks, I have photographed all types of subjects. Most of them have been around my home and garden. Some of my photos I captured on my morning walks. There is a theme to some, while o ..read more

Covid Diaries Week Five

I can’t imagine what it must be like for people who have gravely sick relatives in the hospital or care homes, who they can not visit. This week we had to take my mother-in-law into the hospital for a heart valve replacement. My husband and father-in-law could only take her as far as admitting. We had to trust that she was in good hands. She spent two and a half days in the hospital by herself. It was tough not to be there for her, and even harder on my father-in-law. We are fortunate, though, all went well. Sue was home safely on Thursday. My heart goes out to all those who are not as lucky ..read more

Who would have thought terms like “flatten the curve,” “social distancing,” “PPE’s,” “contact tracing,” and “N95” would make up so much of our vocabulary today. I hadn’t heard of any of these expressions a couple of months ago. It is hard to believe that today is the start of week five of lockdown in British Columbia. What is Normal According to those in the know, we are likely to be shut in for another month or so. It is incredible how people have adapted to the new “normal.” Many wear masks and gloves in the grocery store. Most folks give you a wide berth or even cross the street when they w ..read more

Today marks the end of our third week in isolation and my second week of documenting the Covid-19 pandemic through photographs. There is so much disturbing news overwhelming us right now. So this week, I want to bring you a personal story that has a happy ending. This unanticipated result of the lockdown has brought so much happiness to my husband and me. Empty Nesters My husband and I have been empty nesters for almost eight years now. Both our daughters have great jobs and lives of their own. However, due to a rough patch nearly four weeks ago, our youngest came home for a “week or so ..read more

Wow, how the world has changed in these past few weeks! Where I live in Vancouver, we have been strongly encouraged to social distance ourselves and stay at home. We are not in full lockdown yet, as many locations are. However, if social distancing does not work, I’m sure we will be facing much stricter controls soon. So with Covid-19 sweeping across the globe, how do you keep your sanity in these unprecedented times? To get through all this craziness, I’ve started a self-isolation photography project. Find Something You Love So how do you keep your spirits high in a time like this? For ..read more

First Impressions of the Fujifilm X100V From an X100F User

As soon as I heard that the new Fujifilm X100V was water-resistant and sported a flip screen, I knew I had to have one! I have been in love with the X100 series cameras since my first Fujifilm purchase of an X100T back in 2016. That camera was paramount in re-kindling my love of photography during a bit of a creative slump. My next purchase was an X100F a year later. The X100F and I have a very close working relationship; it is always with me. So when I got a call from our local camera shop that my new X100V had arrived and was ready for pickup, I was as excited as a kid on Christmas morning ..read more

Year of the Rat

This year saw the 47th edition of the Chinese New Year Parade in Vancouver. It wound through the streets of Chinatown on Sunday, January 26th and marked the start of the year of the rat on the lunar calendar. I love shooting in Chinatown. However, in all my years living in Vancouver, I have never been to the parade before. I have wanted to go many times. However, for one reason or another, I have not been organized enough to go downtown to watch. Luckily a friend, Anita, reminded me about it in time to put it on my schedule with indelible ink this year. Who doesn’t love a parade? As ..read more

Vancouver Snow Storm 2020

I live in Coquitlam, a suburb of Vancouver, British Columbia. Here on the west coast, we experience a mild, temperate climate. Our winters are typically dull and damp, very damp, in fact! Our temperatures typically vary between 1C and 9C (34F and 48F). Believe it or not, I am envious of locations that experience snowy winters. From a photographic point of view, snow is magical! Golf in January Vancouverites are quite smug. We are known to flaunt our above freezing temperatures to the rest of the country, wearing shorts in December and golfing in January! Typically, when we do get snow, t ..read more
