It was likely that DU men’s (11-3, 5-1) lacrosse would play at home but a mystery if Denver women’s (15-3, 5-0) lacrosse team would be home or have to go on the road for the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Sunday night during the selection show, both teams learned their fate. The 2024 NCAA women’s lacrosse tournament features 29 teams, with the top three seeds receiving first-round byes and 8 seeded teams. 10th ranked/#1 seed Denver (15-3, 6-0) capped an undefeated BIG EAST regular season by winning the BIG EAST Tournament against #2 seed UConn,16-14. DU built a 9-1 lead but had to withstand a 4th-quarter tie with the Huskies to escape with the win and the BIG EAST title. Denver reeled off five straight goals to open the first quarter of play. Caroline Colimore and Sloane Kipp scored for Denver in the first two minutes to race out to a quick lead. #4 ranked/#1 seed Denver men’s lacrosse (11-3, 5-1) traveled to Villanova, Pennsylvania to face the Wildcats in a BIG EAST Conference semifinal tilt Thursday afternoon. Denver lost their clean sheet against conference rivals, falling to the unranked Wildcats 10-9 and missing out on the BIG EAST finals. #10 ranked and top BIG EAST Tournament seed University of Denver women’s lacrosse (14-3, 6-0) played the fourth-seeded Villanova Wildcats at Xavier Thursday in a BIG EAST semifinal game. #1 seed DU has never lost to the Wildcats (12-0) and Thursday was no exception as Denver trouced Villanova 19-7. The DU-Marquette men’s lacrosse game was delayed by lightning and inclement weather for over two hours from a planned 7:00 pm start at Peter Barton Stadium Friday night. A handful of fans remained to watch the soggy marathon as Denver owned the second half, coasting to a 15-9 win. The defending national champions, Denver Hockey, announced their 2024-25 schedule Wednesday. Denver opens the season with a trip to David Carle’s home state of Alaska on October 5th & 6th to face the Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves. The Pioneers then return to home ice against Northeastern two weeks later.  The non-conference schedule is highlighted by a Wisconsin Badger trip to Magness on October 25th and 26th, followed by a road trip to face Yale on November 1st & 2nd. If it was a prize fight, officials would have thrown the towel in after the first round. Denver forged an 8-stroke lead on second place Oral Roberts after Day 1. Denver added another 13 strokes to their advantage on Day 2. Denver bettered the next best team, South Dakota State, in the third and final round by 18 strokes. After the smoke cleared, five Denver golfers were in the top seven and DU had a 42-stroke lead on second place Oral Roberts. For the second season in a row, Denver head coach David Carle has been tabbed to coach Team USA at the IIHF World Junior Tournament in Ottawa, Canada.  The tournament will begin on December 26, 2024 and will end with the gold medal game being played on January 5, 2025. Carle guided the USA to a 6-2 win over Sweden in the final of the 2024 tournament in Gothenburg, Sweden. Two-time NCAA champion junior defenseman Sean Behrens signed a three-year NHL deal with the Colorado Avalanche last night. He will begin his professional career with the Colorado Eagles of the AHL on an amateur tryout contract. His NHL deal will begin in the fall. Behrens signed his Avs contract Thursday night at the Colorado Avalanche game against the Oilers as his teammates looked on.
