The nation’s school meals will get a makeover under new nutrition standards that limit added sugars for the first time, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday. The final rule also trims sodium in kids’ meals, although not by the 30% first proposed in 2023. And it continues to allow flavored milks — such as chocolate milk — with less sugar, rather than adopting an option that would have offered only unflavored milk to the youngest kids. [time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”] The aim is to improve nutrition and align with U.S. dietary guidelines in the program that provides ..read more

(WASHINGTON) — Ukraine for the first time has begun using long-range ballistic missiles provided secretly by the United States, bombing a Russian military airfield in Crimea last week and Russian forces in another occupied area overnight, American officials said Wednesday. [time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”] Long sought by Ukrainian leaders, the new missiles give Ukraine nearly double the striking distance — up to 300 kilometers (190 miles) — that it had with the mid-range version of the weapon that it received from the U.S. last October. One of the officials said the U.S. is providing more of ..read more

The Transportation Department said airlines will be required to provide automatic cash refunds within a few days for canceled flights and “significant” delays. TIME Magazine

Climate experts spoke with actor and environmental activist Shailene Woodley at the TIME100 Summit on Wednesday about ensuring that America not only moves toward a clean energy future, but that it happens equitably. Communities living near facilities that significantly pollute the air often disproportionately suffer the health costs, while the jobs tend to be reaped by neighborhoods further away, says Robert D. Bullard, professor and director of Bullard Center for Environmental and Climate Policy at Texas Southern University. This same disparity should not occur with the transition to clean ..read more

What a TikTok Ban in the U.S. Could Mean for You
TIME Magazine
by Associated Press

No, TikTok will not suddenly disappear from your phone. Nor will you go to jail if you continue using it after it is banned. After years of attempts to ban the Chinese-owned app, including by former President Donald Trump, a measure to outlaw the popular video-sharing app has won congressional approval and is on its way to President Biden for his signature. The measure gives Beijing-based parent company ByteDance nine months to sell the company, with a possible additional three months if a sale is in progress. If it doesn’t, TikTok will be banned.
