The first time you walk into a Pilates studio and begin your Pilates practice it can be overwhelming. Learning the Pilates apparatus, the Pilates exercises and also a new language in Pilates speak of terms. Many Pilates beginners think it is easy, they weren’t sore enough the next day and it seems simple in a lot of ways. In any new thing, you are learning the basics of Pilates and the shapes and moves the Pilates teacher is asking for you to do. Getting the basics of Pilates takes time and patience. The basics always start with the mat work. This is the foundation of Joseph Pilates work. It i ..read more

Joseph Pilates wanted to have this Pilates method which he called Contrology to be something that helped Pilates clients in the outside world. What can Pilates promise you?

Will Pilates get me in shape? Will Pilates get rid of my back pain? How much weight can I lose doing Pilates? Will Pilates make me have better posture? Will Pilates get rid of my cellulite? These are all questions I have been asked many times in my 30 years of teaching Pilates. Clients want to know what a Pilates workout will do exactly for them if they decide to come to take a Pilates session. What can Pilates promise you? That question is as individualized as the work of Pilates itself. Every person who comes to do a Pilates workout will get what they are needing for their own body at that m ..read more

How important is when you breathe in Pilates?

Breathing and Pilates. Pilates and Breathing. How important is breathing in your Pilates workout? Is it something that has to be learned in the beginning? When to inhale in that particular Pilates exercise? When to exhale in another Pilates exercise? Should it be the thing that as Pilates teachers or clients you are the most focused on? There are many thoughts on the importance of the breathing in Pilates so, I am just going to give you my thoughts on Pilates Breathing. Joseph Pilates said “Lazy breathing converts the lungs, literally and figuratively speaking, into a cemetery for the deposit ..read more

Do Pilates anywhere but, the Pilates studio is where the work is!

One thing that has always been a part of Pilates is the ability to do it wherever and whenever you want. Your Pilates workout can be done at home, in your office, and even in a hotel room. Joseph Pilates wanted everyone to be doing Pilates every day and even wrote a book “Return to Life” that was Pilates homework for clients to take the mat home. Pilates clients could do their Pilates every day at home if they wanted. Pilates is in gyms, online, and for many after the Pandemic at their own home with apparatus in the garage or an extra room. Pilates can now be done very literally anywhere and t ..read more

Pilates is a workout that truly is about change. Many clients who first come to Pilates don’t “feel the burn” or “get it” and wonder what exactly is the point of Pilates. New Pilates clients are learning the apparatus, the choreography of the exercises, and their body is having to engage and work in ways it hasn’t before. On the other hand, long-time Pilates clients may be wanting to do things in their Pilates practice they used to do but, due to injury, life changes, or issues they have no control over so Pilates again changes with them. Pilates is a practice that changes with you as time and ..read more

Creating calm in your Pilates teaching moments

How do you remain calm as a Pilates teacher when that unexpected “thing” happens while you are teaching your Pilates client. I like to say that teaching Pilates is like being a detective every day. Each Pilates client who comes into the Pilates studio is a new moment of watching, seeing what choices their body makes, and figuring out how to get that body of the Pilates client in front of you to move freely and with the full body range that that individual body was made to move. Each Pilates client is unique and different. For you the Pilates teacher, this makes teaching interesting with every ..read more

Doing Pilates for the first time can be very overwhelming for the new Pilates client. Walking into that Pilates studio can be a little scary with all the Pilates apparatus that has springs, bars and looks like a bit of a torture chamber at first glance. The Cadillac in a Pilates studio for example can look like a medieval device or at least that is what some new Pilates clients have said. Pilates clients are also being asked to move their bodies in ways that maybe they have never attempted before. To put it very simply Pilates is like learning a new language. Pilates also has a reputation for ..read more
